I am about a month into college. For the first week of college, I had a blast and didn't think about home very much at all. After that, homesickness hit me hard. I constantly miss home. I only live an hour away, and I have visited home a couple of times. It's weird because I have gone to summer camps and I never missed home, in fact I hardly thought about home. It's also not like I'm not making friends in college. I just cannot overcome this homesickness, even though I am having fun and making friends. What do I do? I really want to get rid of the homesickness. I miss my parents and my whole family, as we were a very tight family for my whole life. I also miss my dog. I really just want to get used to college. Thanks.

The best way to combat homesickness is to keep busy. Keep busy with classes, with your friends, with things at your school. Time will fly when you’re really busy. Talk to your family via phone/skype to keep in touch and make plans for going home over winter break so you have a visit home to look forward to.

I went through this. It was terrible.
I also got over it. It took me a full year, but it happened. It will happen for you too.

It’s difficult. For one of my children, calling and visiting helped. For another one, that just made it worse.
