I misspelled Johns as John Hopkins

Will that spell out an instant rejection for me? I applied ED II — I’m confident in my essay being a solid and good one, but I don’t know how fatal of a mistake this is. Should I contact admissions? I’m just stressing out

It is unfortunate, but I have seen people make that exact mistake numerous times. It won’t help, but won’t knock you out either. Of course, it is in the hands of the reader. I have, personally, made exceptions on things like that for someone I feel is an excellent fit.

That makes me feel a lot better, honestly. I don’t know how I could have slipped up that bad, but to know that it won’t automatically discredit everything else has pacified me a fair bit.

If your application is good, there’s no need to worry

In my opinion, it helps somewhat that Johns Hopkins represents one individual, as would your misspelling.

One of my students is headed to Brown. He misspelled it Browns. I wouldn’t worry too much, but the more important thing is that you have applied to a balanced list of likelies, matches and reaches.

I bet it happens a lot because of spellcheck. Nothing you can do so just try not to worry.

How many times did you do that on the app?

Twice.

The readers spend less than 4-6 minutes per application. They will read your that essay in less than 30 seconds. They will read so many Johns Hopkins, John Hopkins, Johns Hopkin, etc… They will gloss over it. Don’t worry it won’t matter.
