So I've been put in a double in Stern, which was definitely not at the top of my list (it wasn't even ON my list, really). I've searched old threads and all I've been able to find is that it's really quiet and anti-social. I'm not the most outgoing person in the world, but I would rather have my dorm experience be at least somewhat social and fun. I can just imagine meeting people the first few days and not being able to get any conversation out of any of them! :(

So can people who live(d) in Stern share their experiences? People on Berkeley's LJ really seemed to hate it, which is discouraging. I can only console myself by saying that the rooms are pretty big and that I might luck out and end up with a more social group.

i'm really surprised too, seeing that my first choice was a triple suite from units 1, 2 or 3.

this lottery system of housing is totally unfair.

but seeing that i'd consider myself social, and you would consider yourself very social as well, we can't really judge the people who are assigned to dorm there despite stern hall's reputation of being very quiet, and "antisocial".

I was assigned to stern hall as well, in a triple room

aw man, i just got out of that women's prison

it sucks

everyone i met was weird, save maybe four friendships?

i hated it. i really did.

the girl next door to me tried to kill her roommate and was taken out.
there was always this strange antisocial atmosphere.

but i mean, im just one person with one experience.
im sure there are people who love it too.

although the only people i can think of who are requesting it again next year are afraid of boys.

Yeah, I know there are some people who LOVE it, but I've definitely heard more people who hate it (but maybe that's just response bias hahaha..yeah, apparently I DID learn something in statistics). And it's unfortunate that the people who hate it are the social people, but they never seem to find one another!! Ahhhh

I was considering calling the housing office but I don't think it's worth it...I guess I just have to try a little harder? It's just surprising and disappointing since I'd always assumed that first year would be incredibly social due to unit-type dorms, but now that hope has been shot down. Great. I just hope I meet you/people like you (a good start would NOT being deathly afraid of boys). It's still a bummer, though......ughhh

I just finished my year at Bowles and loved it, despite the fact that I love women tremendously. There was a fine sense of comraderie and we have plenty of fun, social events.

On the other side of the table, we have Stern. There are definitely a lot of cool chicks there, but I get the sense that all-female dorm areas are slightly ****tier in general. Females just don't get along well. My gf's all-girls floor in Unit 2 had a horrible, gloomy atmosphere and the bathroom was nasty, lol.

Anyways, if u do end up being there, rest assured that you are what you make of it. Either way, you are pretty much adjacent to foothill, you can always hang around bowles (using your oh-so-feminine voices in the halls to lure males out), and you have a good study environment. Seriously, you'll come to appreciate a quiet dorm more than anything else. College is about work and don't forget that! Berkeley is mofacking huge - there are always social venues available.

^ Thanks for that, I think I was just shocked to get Stern. Okay, shocked is way too strong of a word but I can't think of anything else.

The Living @ Cal site for Stern (http://www.housing.berkeley.edu/livingatcal/stern.html) says that there are "Single and double rooms; double rooms in suites." This is probably a stupid question, but does that mean that all the double rooms are suites? Or does it mean that there are single rooms, double rooms, AND double rooms in suites? I'm leaning toward the latter since the Comparing the Halls chart (http://www.housing.berkeley.edu/livingatcal/comparehalls.html) says Stern has doubles, triples, and double suites.

Stern is right next to Foothill and I guess they share the dining commons? The dining hall is really beautiful. Also, it's close to the Greek theatre so you can probably hear the music from that venue and it's also pretty close to the stadium.

i'm social and i got stuck in stern. so hopefully all us social people can make the best of it? dang, i really wanted one of the units. does it matter that it's not coed? i wanted coed. i hate the lottery system

If you haven't toured Stern, it is GORGEOUS, and it doesn't smell like ass (like Bowles or some of the Units.) The bathrooms are generally somewhat cleaner, and the lounge area is stunning--- what a view! and an enormous grand piano (my favorite part).
