I need a bike.....

So yeah, I need a bike.

I go to UT Austin, to give you an idea of how far I have to walk, etc.

My best friend lives in a dorm across campus and keeps getting lost so I end up walking all the way over there, treking across campus from architecture to calculus in the mid-day heat is tourture, and I would also like to be able to go to a store nearby and not take up half and hour in walking alone and then have to walk back.

I already have locks covered. We have to get a standard bike lock and then a heavy duty metalish lock from the school, if I am not mistaken so I don't need any information about that.

So what Im asking is, what brand of bike has done well for you? And where did you get it? It would be helpful if you did not list some obsure bike shop found only in your college town. =P Stores like target and walmart and sports places, pretty please.

And how much did you pay for it? Im not spending $400 on a bike. It might look pretty but that's too much for me.

Also, is there any sort of special thing that you did to your bike to make it better? ie basket, lights, etc etc etc.

Oh and what about rain and stuff? How does that effect things?

So I would appreciate anything you had to say. =)

son bought his bike from Target for $59.88. It is red, I have no clue of the brand and I doubt if I asked him he would know. After dropping him off at his dorm I had to move the van out to some random parking lot, so kept his bike in the van and I road it back to the dorm; it was a nice ride and it got me from A to B.

I bought one from target too and it was like 65-70 dollars with tax included. I think mine's magma?

I like the baskets :) just make sure nobody tries to snatch something from it (happened to me once while I was going back to my apartment at like 12)

and the rain.. uh either you get talented at riding with an umbrella or you just dont ride those days. Use common sense I dont know what you are expecting to hear.
