I need a definitive answer- Do colleges recalculate GPA?

An E-Mail from my counselor:

Hi (blank),
I just asked the Registrar about the repeated course. She said the grade will show,
however, the credits attempted are removed and not calculated in your GPA.
Colleges do recalculate your transcript using their own formula. You will need to go to
the schools website to confirm how they count grades. Each school is different.
I hope this helps.

Am I done for HYPSM? It'll show a D that I retook for an A...

How will colleges perceive this?

Also, since this D doesn't affect my school GPA and rank, I'll likely be valedictorian.

Does being 1/628 make up for a D if they count it?

Colleges do recalculate GPA. I would imagine the D would be considered. I don’t think that kills you for HYPSM.

Colleges recalculate GPAs based on each individual college’s system. Since Harvard admissions officers don’t appear to be answering questions on CC’s boards, I doubt that anyone here knows how your “D” will affect your Harvard chances.
