I need a new laptop but I don't know where to start looking.......help me!

I think it's time to handoff my macbook to my parents since after 4 years of use, it's starting to not like me anymore :( . I'm thinking about getting a PC laptop since I was kinda annoyed about having to switch between windows and the mac OS. This is the only laptop/computer I've ever had myself so I don't know where to start looking in terms of a non-mac laptop.

Does anybody have any recommendations for a laptop for an engineering major? (I'm doing civil if that affects what type of programs I may have to run in the future?)

If that's too broad of a question, where should I start looking and what should I look for?

Also, I'm gonna be broke after buying this laptop haha, I would prefer not to spend a lot on the laptop.

Here are the minimum requirements listed by my school for a laptop (we're required to have one):

Processor: Intel Core i5-520M Dual Core VPRO (2.4
GHz, 3MB cache)
RAM: 2 GB DDR3
Hard Drive: 160 GB
Ethernet: GB Ethernet
Wireless: Intel Advanced-N 6200 802.11 a/b/g/n
Video Card: nVidia NVS 3100M (or similar)
OS: Windows 7 Professional

If you are looking for a Windows-based laptop, my personal preference is Lenovo.

Get a new mac book pro and just run parallels. **** on the PC! But if you must get an IBM(Lenovo).

If your going into engineering or computer science you might want to check their requirements for computers. Most of the time engineering/computer science students will need better computers then other students.

Lenovo is not IBM. IBM sold its personal computer unit, primiarily the entire ThinkPad line to Lenovo.
And I hate to hear people say Mac better than Windows, or Linux better than Windows. -.-

I think any modern CPU with 2.0Ghz and 2GB is enough already. Like I said on the other thread, good HDD is what most good laptop lacks of.
Another thing is that if you want to run more modern OS like Windows 7 you might consider 4GB - just to help. 2GB is actually very fine as far as I am concern with on my sister’s laptop.
But if you do have XP Pro disc then replacing the windows7 with XP is never a wrong decision.

Yes I will second Lenovo. Get Edge 14". With promotion cod i pulled it down to $580, but the damn tax and shipping put it back to $650! Fine. -.-

You see personal computer is personal. So you choose what you like. But please be ware upgrade components from the supplier costs more.

A requirement? And it’s a minimum? What kind of school is that? Mind to give a name, please?
