I need a Safety School

I have a pretty solid list of schools, but it's top heavy.

Stats:
97.4 uw; Class Rank 6/500; school doesn't offer APs
SAT: 800 CR, 700 M, 770 W (probably retaking in Nov)
SAT II: 800 WH; US Hist and Math IIc in Oct (both hopefully over 750)
African-American from decent private NY hs.

ECs: pretty good, I don't feel like listing them out since this isn't a chance thread

Ok here's my list:
Reaches:Yale (EA),Stanford, Princeton, Wharton

Matches:
Georgetown, Emory, Duke, Wesleyan, UVA, Vassar

I might remove a school or two, but that's pretty much my list. I think I'm pretty safe at Wesleyan and Vassar since my stats are competitive and LACs always need URM males, but they're two small to be considered 'safeties'. At first I had GW and BU, then I realized I need a school with a big, green campus. I'm interested in economics, history or politcal science. Any ideas?

P.S. I don't qualify for fin aid, but I wouldn't mind a school that offers good merit aid.

Boston College would be pretty safe for you, and it has a nice campus.

Georgetown and Duke aren't matches for anyone. They're always reaches. And seeing as you aren't a Virginia resident, UVA is also a reach. Emory, Wesleyan, and Vassar are also reachy, but less so. You should definitely work on getting some better matches. I definitely think you'll get into at least 1 of these schools because you ARE qualified, but at that level, no school can be considered a match, even for the strongest candidates.

Well do you have any suggestions?

P.S. You really think Emory and Vassar are that reachy? I think I at least have a 50/50 shot there. But I know all these schools are very competitive, that's why I'm here asking for safeties!

i'd be very surprised if you didnt get into vassar, especially as a black male. and if you like vassar, you might want to look into connecticut college for a safety- very similar school, gorgeous campus, very strong history/econ departments, and they'd probably give you a generous merit package (they gave me a great one and my scores werent as good as yours), and they are extremely interested in increasing diversity these days

Here are some safeties for you to investigate, especially if you're considering schools with great, big, green campuses. The list favors the east coast as you only have one west coast school on your list but there are others to check out:

Wake Forest University
University of Maryland
University of Delaware
Ohio University
Reed College
University of Washington
Syracuse University
Franklin & Marshall College

Connecticut College would be a MATCH.

Reed College would not be a safety, perhaps a match.

he'd be taking a huge chance to use wake forest as a safety... i mean, i see no reason why he wouldn't get in, but just keep in mind that it's actually pretty competitive.

Oh please, an AA with those grades and scores is entitled to call those schools matches. Good luck!

Ok good suggestions. I think I'll investigate into Boston College (which definitely isn't a safety), Conneticut College, Univ. of Delaware and Syracuse (although it might be to cold for my taste). Safety-wise, I'll probably stay in the Northeast.

Trinity
Skidmore
Union
Wheaton
Clark

all are safeties for you if you submit focused, polished apps and visit & interview.

If you can apply to any of your schools EA you may have a safety in hand early.

Holy Cross-very good LAC with nice campus.

Ok, I have received a few invitations to attend multicultural open houses from schools on these lists. I feel like attending some of the more developed events, such as Trinity's 3 day program, will greatly improve my ability to use that school as a safety. How many colleges did you guys visit/ plan to visit overnight?

P.S. Is attending an information session in your local area counted as showing interest?

Safeties....Maryland, Penn State

maybe unc-chapel hill?

Sorry, I know this thread is about two weeks old, but bear with me. I visited Vassar last weekend and realized a small LAC isn't the place for me. This conclusion makes a few of my original choices and a lot of your suggestions useless.

Have any new ideas for schools with about 4,000 to 15,000 undergraduates? Schools in the 4,000-8,000 range are much more likely, but I'm willing to consider larger schools like Delaware. I'm still interested in economics/business, history or politcal science. If a school meets these requirements and has a nice, traditional college feel, I'm willing to budge on the the big, green campus idea.

dartmouth is a bigger version of a typical new england LAC

Might try Notre Dame also Colgate or Holy Cross.

Check out the following schools as they are likely to be generous with merit aid, they are all excellent schools and you should be able to get in with your stats: Reed, Wooster, Ohio Wesleyan, F&M, Gettysburg.
