So I was admitted into Towson University and Fairleigh Dickinson University at the Metropolitan Campus and I went to visit FDU but I didn’t like it at all. I want to go to Towson but I never visited there. My financial package from Towson only gave me about 6,000 dollars and the rest are loans while FDU gave me about 30,000 dollars in scholarships and grants so I’d only be paying 15,000. The deadline is coming up so I don’t know which school to put in a deposit for but I don’t want to go to FDU. It’s not a school for me and I feel like I’d be miserable there while at Towson I’d have a huge student loan to pay off. My sister suggesting writing an appeal but I don’t have much time left and if I get denied and put in a deposit I’ll have to pay a lot of student loans. I need advice!
How much will Towsen cost you?
The tuition is 36,000 and I received the pell grant so I’d have to pay 30,750 dollars but the rest of the aid given is loans.
Did you apply to any schools that are in state for where you live?
Yes, but and I got into two but one is a commuter school and the other is too expensive
you can’t afford these schools. Where is $15,000 a year going to come from. You received a Pell Grant. Your family doesn’t have that much money.
You need to consider the finances…and honestly I’m not sure FDU at $15,000 a year is any better than Towsen at $30,000 a year…given your family income.
You have a couple of choices.
- Take a gap year and apply next year to a list of affordable schools. use the net price calculators.
- Go to the school to which you can commute to save money.
You can’t borrow that amount of money without a co-signer. So Towson is out. Period. FDU is probably unaffordable too if you would need to come up with $15,000 each year after all of your grants and scholarships.
The size of your Pell Grant tells me that your family is low income. They probably can’t give you much help in paying for your tuition and fees. However, they may be able to feed and house you while you commute to school. So talk with them about that. The simple fact is that in this country more students live at home and commute to school than go away for college. If you find that the only affordable way for you to get your education is commuting, well then you are actually in the majority, and so you are actually having the real college experience.
Happykid commuted to our local community college for two years, and then she transferred to an affordable in-state public U. Check out the community colleges in your area. That Pell Grant might cover all of the tuition, fees, and books there which would allow you to start saving money from a part-time job to put toward the 4-year place you would transfer to.
Can you copy/paste your aid pkgs here.
You’re a Pell student, so that means lowish income. WHO is going to borrow that money? You can’t. Besides that is tooooo much to borrow at either school.
What are your other choices?
My parents are divorced so I used my father’s income in the fasfa. He has a reltively low income because he lost his job. My mother on the other hand is a Nurse and has a good salary because she is a nurse. But I have a large family but she’s claiming a lot of dependants. So we can afford the 15,000 dollars but my mother’s credit is not great so it’d be difficult to take out another loan. I’m the fourth to go to college. So my question is should I appeal for more money at Towson or just go to Fdu and transfer if i dont like it?
How much does the commuter school cost?
The commuter school is bout 3000 and I would take out a loan for 15,000 i would reveive about 10,000 from my mother and 2000 from my father.
Again i used my father’s fasfa who.lost his job. My mother is a nurse.
I woud not take a loan for 15,000
Any chance you could go to the commuter school? It sounds affordable.
I gather you live with your father most of the time.
The ommuter schoolis a branch of a large public school and It really doesnt do aything for me I dont think I will be sucessful in that type of environment.
I was admited at several colleges.
Towson University
FDU
Saint Peter’s University
University of Pittsburgh at Bradford
Uconn Hartford campus the commuter
Quinnipiac university
And I spontaneously decided to apply to dusquene university. So I was thinking I coukd go to a college that isnt too expensive for a year do well then try to apply to the university of Pittsburgh again and a couple other schools then transfer.
You live with your dad or your mom most of the time?
You applied to a bunch of unaffordable out of state or private universities. Why didn’t you apply to one of the CT State University schools…Eastern, Western, Southern, or Central (where you likely could have commuted). These would likely have been more affordable for you.
If you go to UConn Hartford, I believe you are guaranteed acceptance to the main campus if you have a good academic record. Why not go there…save as much money as you possibly can, and transfer to UConn to complete your degree.
The private schools you applied to do not meet full need…and therefore would be too costly…and this includes Duquesne.
Okay, here’s a question for you . . . which of your parents do you actually live with?
I’m guessing it isn’t your out-of-work father. In which case you lied when you used his data on the FAFSA. And it wasn’t just a little white lie . . . it was CRIMINAL FRAUD. And here are the consequences if you’re caught:
(1) prosecution and incarceration;
(2) being required to repay all monies received;
(3) permanent ineligibility for federal financial aid;
(4) expulsion from school; and
(5) loss of any college diploma.
Of course, it’s always possible you won’t get caught, in which case you’ll get to live with the knowledge that your first act as an adult was to be a dishonest scumbag.
Now if I’m mistaken, I apologize (profusely!) for having misjudged you. Perhaps I’m overly suspicious, or just not a very nice person. But if I’m not mistaken, them you need to think long and hard about what you’re going to do next. It’s not to late to amend your FAFSA.
OP has been asked which parent he lives with multiple times on this thread, and has not answered…
I live with my mom. I read all the replies too quickly sorry.
