I need answer ASAP thanks!

I just got an email from Indiana University saying that I have been accepted to the school.
And now I'm wondering is this JUST for Indiana University and not Jacobs School of Music?
Or what is happening because I applied for both Indiana University and Jacobs School of Music.

From our own personal experience, my daughter was accepted first to Indiana and then to the music school after her audition. The best way to make an absolute determination is to call Jacobs and get confirmation. Its admission staff is very friendly and helpful. Good luck.

Same thing happened to my son, accepted by IU from an academic perspective first, which happens very quickly, and then two weeks after the audition by the Music School. Did you do the January audition? Either way I recommend if there is any chance of you going to IU you place your dorm room deposit of $300 down ASAP. If you decide not to go there you lose $100 but if you do you will have a good chance of getting your first choice location. I hestiated till March and that was a mistake. Good luck with your applications.

FWIW, last year, the Jacobs’ acceptance came in a large envelope marked Jacobs School of Music.

My daughter got an email acceptance from IU, the academic school, a couple of months before her audition, which was in January, but we have not heard back from Jacobs.

My son applied to IU and to Jacobs for vocal performance. Here’s a time line to date:

11/21: Applied to IU
12/1: Applied to Jacobs SoM
12/10: Admitted to IU – notified by e-mail
12/16: Invited to audition – notified by e-mail
1/15: Auditioned

Now awaiting the admission decision … They use “rolling admissions” and I have learned that we may learn something as soon as three weeks post-audition.

TenorDad, I emailed the admissions dept last week to ask when we might expect a decisions because my daughter will need arrange for lessons with teachers if accepted, but we don’t want to book airfare unless we know she is accepted. The reply was that we should expect an answer by the end of this week. I dont’ know if that means they will post letters in snail mail on Friday, or if letters will arrive by then, or if students will receive email.

I can only repeat myself. We found IU-Jacobs to be extremely easy to work with. A quick call to the admissions office will answer all your questions. Last year there was a young man named Matt who was very helpful and friendly. See if he’s still there. He will help you if he is still working there.

glassharmonica: Thanks – this is consistent with what I have heard/read. In another thread about IU auditions from last year people reported learning of decisions via snail mail.

NY Jazz Dad,

Interested to know more about the mistake of waiting until March to put down the dorm room deposit. My son doesn’t audition audition until the March date, though has already been accepted by the university. IU is high on his list, but we have no idea where he’ll be accepted yet since he hasn’t had any auditions. Did your son not get a dorm room on campus, or just not his first choice. Is there a dorm where the music majors generally live?

Jazzkat, Yes you can put down a deposit on a dorm room as soon as you are accepted by the university and if IU is high on your son’s list I might chance the loss of $100. The main music dorm is Read (southeast community) and there is a Performing Arts learning community in that dorm I think. My son ended up in Forest which is still close to the music school although most of the kids in that dorm are not music kids and tend to stay up very late but the music kids have most of their thoery classes in the early morning as all the ensembles rehearse in the afternoon. Other music kids ended up dorming across campus which is a real pain in the cold weather. IU generally houses all freshman kids although a few can end up living in lounges for the first semester. Although my son is at IU for classical music he is playing in one of the four jazz big bands and has been very impressed with the jazz program run by Dave Baker which does not get much press really so no idea how tough it is to get accepted. Only thing is in jazz like all the programs at IU the top bands tend to be dominated by the Master’s and Doctoral students as they make up 54% of the music school. Hope that helps…

Thanks, NJ Jazz Dad, the information is very helpful, and we’ll go ahead and put down the room deposit. Without your tip, we would not have known to do that now.
