So currently (and unfortunately), I am in the process of my third year here at a ca. cc. I want to transfer for fall of 2012, but I don't think I have the gpa. During my time here Ive come to realize that i wasn't meant to be a science major and completed sciences courses and received a C in both. Obviously this has damaged my gpa and hopefully i'll have a 3.25 by the end of fall 2011 semester.
Now i do have a bad gpa but i think my EC's are okay
i was in the honors program for a year
and two honors societies (still in one)
i volunteered last year about 30hrs to an elementary school library
im currently volunteering at boys and girls club
I've done other unpaid volunteering through work
i volunteer (about a week) and donate items to rehab centers and orphanages in mexico during my summers
im Hispanic (which idk if it even does anything anymore)
i've travelled alot abroad
and i have finished spanish and currently working on french
I'm just not sure if i am ready to apply for this coming fall of 2012. I wanted to apply to USC, American University, UCI, UCSD, U of San Francisco, BU and maybe some others. i just dont know if im a qualified applicant for any of these schools or maybe should wait for spring 2013 to apply to (except for UC). What do you think?

por favor :)

i honestly need help, counselors are not very helpful.

Being Hispanic doesn’t in and of itself count for much in transferring, but most colleges do look at hardship factors–so if there is anything of that nature that you can bring out in an essay, that is something to consider.

People with 3.3 gpas get into the mid-UCs and many mid-tier privates, but it all has to do with how you package your transcript application. Since your poor grades were in sciences and you are NOT a science major anymore, that is in your favor. What is your intended major? How are the grades in those pre-req classes?

You need a great recommendation and you need to write an essay that really lets the adcoms know what “special” thing you bring to the campus. It is almost like branding/marketing what is great about you and getting it across with the limited materials of the application.

I would say that you might get into a place like UCI or U San Fran, but uncertain about the others you listed. It is a funny thing trying to guess. I know transfer students with a 3.9 who got rejected from Santa Clara University and I know transfer students with 3.1 and a 3.25 who got accepted to that same university. My guess is that the lower ranked gpa students had something about them that stood out–leadership qualities, overcoming hardships, and most likely a combo. With that said, SCU and UofSF are Jesuit schools and place a lot of importance on qualities beyond strictly a gpa. I can’t quite say if USC would be the same.

In the end, you can only try. If you don’t do well the first round, you can apply spring or the following fall. In the meantime, get that gpa up!!

Good luck.
