I Need Backup

Hey - I have applied to UMich and UIUC and will apply to both Purdue and Georgia Tech. I was deferred EA at UMich, my original top choice, so I have been applying elsewhere. My question is, should I apply to more safeties? Here are my stats...
UW GPA: 4.0
ACT: 29 - with 32 Math
Legacy only at Purdue
Class Rank: 1 of 15
School does not offer AP's - however I have taken the hardest courseload...
EC's - 4 varsity letters in 4 sports, 6 time team captain, conference soccer MVP
- 4 years StuCo, Student Body President and Vice President
- 3 years drama, 2 lead roles
- Quiz Bowl captain 4 years
- Lots of volunteering - 2 mission trips
Essays - common app is very good, UIUC were good - not great, Purdue's is excellent, haven't started GT
OOS for all - live in Iowa
Am I set with applying to these? Which are matches? Which are reaches? Where else to apply if applicable?

I think You’d easily get into Georgia Tech.

Purdue is much easier to get admitted to than Michigan, but is about as rigorous and has about the same respect so it’s absolutely a good option. I’m not surprised that you were deferred from Michigan but I think you have a decent shot of getting in. But in case you don’t, I very highly doubt you’d be rejected from Purdue. If you are happy with Purdue then I think you’re fine.

If really want to find somewhere else and are from Michigan, you might consider applying to Michigan Tech and/or Michigan State.

This is very assuring; thanks guys! I am hoping for the best, but want to make sure I’m set with applications. Anyone else have a thought?

My concern is that you have a pile of schools with early or rolling admissions with priority deadlines and you haven’t applied yet. Many of these schools would have been safeties but aren’t anymore because they are filling up.

Apply to Iowa State because you need a safety. They have automatic admissions for you.

Is not purdue the only rolling admission school?

No. Georgia Tech does not have rolling admissions. They have EA which is already done and then RD. Probably half of GT’s slots are gone. Also remember they deferred a number of kids. You might get in but I don’t think GT is a safety.

What about LSU? I think it would be a safety and they have rolling admissions or
University of Alabama. I am sure you would get into Michigan Tech plus with your
ACT you would get a merit scholarship.

"Priority Filing Period
Freshman Applicants

September 1 – November 1, 2012

To apply during the Priority Filing Period, a complete application must be submitted online by midnight Central time on November 1, or if applying by paper, postmarked by November 1. All supporting documents (application fee, Self-Reported Academic Record, and test scores) must be postmarked or received by November 1. Completing the application during the Priority Filing Period may give you an advantage when space is limited."

Space is limited.

Translation: Completing the application after the Priority Filing Period may give you a disadvantage when space is limited.

"Freshman Applicants

There are two admissions notification dates: December 14, 2012, and February 15, 2013.

If you apply during the Priority Filing Period, you can view your admission status online on December 14, 2012. Students who have been admitted will receive official notification letters; students who have been deferred or denied will only be able to view their admission decision online. "

I assume that since you didn’t hear, you either didn’t meet the deadline, or you were deferred. Both of these situations render UIUC to be not a safety.

"
Fall 2013 Freshmen

Future freshmen should apply early in their senior year of high school (August-October); admission will be more competitive for those who apply later"

He could easily get into LSU, but it just looked as though he was applying to top tier state schools, and LSU isn’t considered one of those…it’s a rather good school, just isn’t considered to be in the same league as schools like UMich and Georgia tech.

Would Iowa State be a safety based on the formula here?
[Admission Requirements | Iowa State University Admissions](First-year Students - Iowa State University)

Also, can you afford all of the out-of-state public schools?

Iowa State is in-state and automatic based on that formula from the data OP’s already given us. They only accept people who fill out the application though.

Ghost - yes, but we are talking about safeties and he has a 29 ACT. I’m don’t think 29 is a safety at GT. People with higher scores were denied or deferred during EA. Plus I’m not sure what where the ACT cut off is for Purdue. I think he should have at least 2 schools that he knows for sure he will get in just in case.

A bit too late, but UCD would have been a good safety.

Thanks guys, my mindset changed later in the year (2012) after visiting Michigan. I never really thought I would like the big, powerhouse schools being that I hale from Podunkville. I was wrong… Michigan was sort of a last minute add. I applied right at the deadline - before I visited. I, therefore, missed the cutoffs for all these other schools’ priority filing periods. Which is unfortunate, but is how it played out. I have just applied to Iowa State; will hear back from the them in a couple of days.
