I need Chances

I know I won't get into Kelley as a freshman but what are my chances of getting into IU?

From Minnesota

GPA is 3.31

ACT is 27

I rank top 40-50% in the class

NHS, 3 sport athlete, have a job

Mostly regular classes, all honors senior year though and a few junior

... any chance?

I think you should get in. I had a 3.3/32/50% and got in. But IU particularly likes my high school (I am a DA). But regardless of the high school, from what I’ve heard you’ve got a pretty good shot.

3.3 and a direct admit. They must LOVE your high school. Is it the one all the movie stars went to? It must not have grade inflation considering your excellent ACT.

I went to New Trier (Winnetka, IL) and they do love us. About 60/1000 kids from my school go to IU every year. I think they do inflate grades because I also got the distinction scholarship.

Rainn Wilson from The Office, among many others. Our school has won a Grammy, so I guess our music and theatre is pretty decent.

Every college and university loves New Trier High School because it produces a large number of highly qualified applicants with parents who can afford OOS and private school tuition.

toffa813,
Just to clarify, you must have at least a 3.8 to get the distinction scholarship so 3.3 must be your unweighted average? You must have taken a very rigorous courseload. Congrats.

I think they take weighted GPAs from my school (I had a 3.81 when I applied, phew) I took all 3 level classes (which are middle level classes at my school) but they say its like an honors class at most schools. It was tough to say the least.

And thanks. I am very excited :)

So Toffa, you actually had over a 3.8 weighted, not a 3.3, right? My understanding is that IU looks at weighted GPA, is that not correct? In that case, you met all the requirements for a direct admit.

They do grade inflation for my high school, so they use weighted GPAs, but they usually use unweighted for most schools.

“Minimum GPA of 3.80 on a 4.0 scale”

beth’s mom, I’m not sure who the “they” is in toffa’s reply #9, but I just want to clarify that IU will take whatever GPA is provided to them. It’s very important to make sure that your high school guidance office provides the weighted GPA when they submit the transcript to IU. It can make the difference between scholarship/no scholarship and direct admit/no DA.

Sorry, I was referring to IU

^^^thanks for clarifying. However, your statement that IU usually uses “unweighted for most schools” is not accurate. They will use whichever gpa the high school submits. That is why it is so important that applicants make sure that a WEIGHTED gpa is included on their transcript, if they want to improve their chances for certain scholarships and direct admission.

Of course, this is advice only applies if your hs weights grades.

My D’s school doesn’t put anything on the transcript except weighted GPA. They don’t rank, and they don’t use unweighted GPA for any purpose. I don’t even think they calculate or keep track of unweighted GPA. So I guess that’ll work out well for IU.

^^^that’s good. My S’s high school experimented with totally unweighted grades during the years he was there (of course!). Luckily, it didn’t hurt him, but the administration finally figured out that our district’s kids were at a disadvantage relative to other high schools and reinstated weighted grades last year.
