I need CHEMISTRY class advice. Please and thanks!

How challenging is CHEM 144? I will be entering UW as a freshman this fall. I've had chemistry in high school and I plan on majoring in neurobiology to become a pediatrician specializing in neurology. Plus, I know there is a general CHEM 142 class but I am doing some independent studying this summer in hopes for a smoother transition to college chemistry. Should I "just" enroll in CHEM 142? OR Prepare for a bit more of a challege and take CHEM 144? Is there not much of a difference at all between the two levels of chemistry? If so, please let me know. Thank you very much!

I can’t vouch for the quality of Chem 144 (I took 145), but in general, you should avoid taking the larger classes if you can.

Neurobio isn’t the easiest major to get into, so I would recommend the most rigorous course load that you are prepared for. If you took AP chem in high school (and did alright), I would recommend 144. If you did well enough, I would recommend 145. If you take 142, you may be shorting yourself in the long run (but you will probably get a better grade).

My high school actually did not have AP Chem available, so I just took regular Chem-not an honors class. I got A- for both semesters. I prefer a bit of a challenge but do not want to risk too much because it is college after all…

From what I have heard from my Orientation leader he said that 142 and 144 cover the same material but 144 is always a week or two ahead of 142. If you want to feel confident starting your college career I think you should take 142 but if you can handle the pace 144 is for you.

UDubhopeful when was your orientation?

July 1-2 was my Orientation.
