I need college clothes! Wardrobe time!

I want to start building a more college-like wardrobe. I have too many american eagle jeans and old t shirts with crazy logos.

I want to know what brand of jeans to look into for the nice slim fit.

Also what brands are good for chinos/khakis?

And buttondowns seem to be the popular choice right now? What brand for those are good.

What should I do for shorts also?

I'm a guy. Thanks in advance!

I think that a priority item for a college student is a good fitting 100% cotton white oxford dress shirt. (Barrel cuffs or French Cuffs depending on taste)

It can go with almost any bottom, it can be dressed up with dress pants or dressed down with jeans or chinos.

A white dress shirt is classic and never goes out of style. It can be very versatile and when made of cotton it feels good and makes women look twice when you walk down the street.

A word of caution: Stay away from polyester, the plastic/petroleum based product that is bad for business and dating. Who wants to wear a plastic/petroleum blend that can melt into your skin and spontaneously combust if exposed to a heat source and fuel?

Polyester is a cheap fabric and not the best for good quality mens clothing.

I absolutely love jeans from Express. You should go there and try some on - but only if they’re on sale (usually they have a buy one get one half off deal or something).
Try Pacsun, too, if Express isn’t your style.

Edit: Oh trololo I didn’t see that you’re a guy. I’m not sure if Express has men’s jeans - they probably do, and you should still check them out. :)

Express has plenty of mens clothes, Profrogue:)

Look for good quality “basics.” Things to look for are country of origin, materials used (all cotton, polyester, rayon, etc), and definitely how to wash. No point getting something that needs special attention.

My male friends have had particular luck with Lucky Brand jeans, although they tend to be expensive. If you wait and buy on the day after Thanksgiving, they occasionally have “buy one, get one __% off.”

Lots of button down shirts, sweaters/sweater vests, and polo shirts work well throughout college and are classy and professional for later on too.

Whatever you like, which fits you properly.

Many university age men have a hard time finding properly fitting dress shirts or button down shirts, since most buyers of such shirts are older men (so the shirts are shaped to accommodate them).

I never understand this whole… I need to go make a whole new wardrobe cause I’m going to college now. Clothes are clothes… you can wear exactly what you have been for years.

^People like to change there styles. It happens. Honestly some of the stuff you might’ve wornd during high school might just come off as immature now when you look at it.

Express Men and Buckle have excellent jeans and nice clothes in general. They’re more than a little pricey though. I think American Eagle Clothes are fine myself, as I also havea few Tshirts and Jeans from there. I have a few shirts from Aeropostale. Wouldn’t reccomend Hollisters Tshirts. Pretty cheap stuff that can rip extremely easily.

Dress Shirts and Polos can be worn for just about any occasion. Here’s an Express shirt you might like:

http://www.express.com/mk2-fitted-stretch-cotton-shirt-18917-49/index.pro#jsLink

I just ordered 2 of them and I see that they have a new red color now.

If you arent sure about what works/what doesnt but are interested in clothes that will go with you a number of years as well into some jobs/internships - stick with the classics. You cant go wrong until your taste matures/comes into your own. I would recommend jcrew for a few initial buys. Dont buy not on sale. If you have access to their outlets, go for it. Sometimes they have clothes direct from their main stores, sometimes made for outlet, which will be somewhat cheaper fabrics, but still maintain integrity of the brand. In the main stores and catalogues you can easily buy slim jeans that cost 300 normally for under 50, if you hit the sale just right.
Similarly with Ralph Lauren.
The express shirt in the post above looks great for a club, but you would never wear in a corporate setting.

^I definitely have to second Ralph Lauren, but there stuff can be pretty pricey so you might wanna check at Dillards for whenever they’re having a sale.

And I already have one of the Express Shirts. Trust me, it can be worn to more than just a club. LOL I wouldnt even wear it to most clubs. Only a really classy one. You can wear it to class, a club, a job interview, etc.

I think button downs look great when guys wear them to class. I don’t know much about men’s jeans, but generally dark wash jeans are more versatile (you can dress them up or down).

on shorts: cargos…?

I bought most of my clothes from Land’s End, or their spin-off company, Land’s End Canvas. Their quality is actually very good, as well as fit and comfort. I typically wear their oxford/dress shirts, and khakis/chinos if I’m not just wearing Levi’s. Overall, I’d recommend Land’s End, try to start there and see what you like.

I highly recommend cargo shorts for shorts. Now THAT’s college attire. Stay away from chinos and khakis. You actually want to be liked.

“on shorts: cargos…?”

super fr4tty people will tell you no, everybody with better things to worry about will tell you that nobody gives a damn if you wear cargo shorts or not.

I want to keep it simple and buy stuff that may be wearable for internships/job/life after college.

Are gap jeans any good? I will look into jcrew and Land’s End.

Shoes? Should I get a pair of boat shoes? Or what are casual shoes that go with a lot of things?

What companies for buttondowns? What are the opinions on flannels too? Are those okay for college, or mainly a high school fad?

Boat shoes go with a lot. A pair of Clarks Desert Boots are also useful. I buy a lot of button shirts from Gap and they are wonderful. Super comfy and they’ve lasted forever. I also have a JCrew shirt that I like. As for flannel, if you like it go for it. Better to feel confident in what you are wearing.

^^^^^^^^^ I’m not saying people can’t change their style, but I don’t understand why people have this notion that you must get new clothes for college.

^Eh, its probably cause of the whole idea that you can reinvent yourself in college. Be whoever you want to be.

I just want to get new clothes…is it that big of a deal? I don’t really like the skinny jeans I wear anymore. I would like to look more professional in college and have basic clothes I can wear for several years.

Regarding jeans, I think a slim fit will work well for me, but not skinny. What should I look at besides gap?

Also, besides boat shoes, any recommendations? I have old nike basketball shoes but I don’t think I want to wear those anymore.

Maybe some oxfords? As for jeans, Levis are pretty good IMO.
