I live in washington. So far thinking engineering major but not sure yet. A list of five or so good college options would be great! Thanks :)

ECs arent that great but should beef them up this summer

University of Washington is an obvious one.

But what kind of cost constraints are you looking at?

Cost is definetely a factor. What kind of scholarship money (if any) could i get with my stats at different places? Mostly west coast schools

There are some http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/1348012-automatic-full-tuition-full-ride-scholarships-17.html#post15743177 to look into, but most are in the south.

Some other western schools offer Western University Exchange (WUE) discounts or scholarships: [WICHE - Student Exchange Programs](http://wue.wiche.edu/search_results.jsp?searchType=all) However, some of the schools limit the WUE discounts or scholarships to some majors. Most of the schools offering WUE discounts or scholarships are less selective ones.

If you want a smaller engineering focused school that is not super-selective (like Caltech) or expensive, consider New Mexico Mines and South Dakota Mines.

The California publics are not big on big merit scholarships. There is the full ride Drake scholarship for mechanical engineering majors at Berkeley, but that is going to be an extreme reach at best (even getting into mechanical engineering at Berkeley is no sure thing).

For need-based financial aid, check the net price calculators at the school web sites.

Haha funny you should mention south dakota school of mines. Both my parents went there. Could i get any merit based aid at University of Wash? Or university of wisconsin-madison?

What is your situation. If we just name schools where you “might” get some merit, that won’t help you if in the end the merit isn’t enough or you aren’t awarded any.

How much merit do you need? In other words, how much will your parents pay?

For instance, if your parents will pay about fifteen thousand per year, then you need a full tuition scholarship so that your parents’ contribution will pay for room, board, books, fees, and misc costs.

So, if that’s the case, then getting ten thousand per year at a school that costs forty thousand won’t do you any good. You wouldn’t be able to cover the remaining costs.

WUE probably won’t work for you. WUE schools rarely will combine WUE discounts and scholarships so you end up paying more than UWash, and it sounds like you need merit to attend UWash.

UWash isn’t known for merit, but you could try.

Since you need aid, then you need to protect yourself and apply to a couple of schools where you know for sure that you’ll get enough merit to attend. Those can be your backup schools.
