I am now a senior and it time to apply for college. I have been looking at the UMKC 6 year Medical program ever since the beginning of sophomore year (i know its early) to get ready to be accepted. I have been looking at different posts around the website relating to this school and I could not find anything that fits my situation exactly, so let me tell you what has happened with me.....
I first started high school taking easy classes freshman year. I did perfect and got straight A's in every class (surprise) . When I entered sophomore year I entered honors sceince and math classes. Again I got perfect A's. Then during my junior year I took pre-calc, anatomy and physiology, ap biology, and sociology. I took everything other than history and english cause I am not that well even though I get A's in them. Then I took the ACT which I thought I would do good on but it turns out not....I got a 28. My parents have enrolled me in a Kaplan Course to help me even though I think it is not that good. For my senior year I am going to take AP CALC AB, AP Chemistry, Physics, Exploring Health Professions and again regular history and english classes.
Now for my extracurricular activities I did not know that there was a benefit of them all the time I was in high school up to the time where my parents and counselor had a college prep meeting. Don't blame my parents they studied overseas where they did not need to go through this type of application. I was lucky though because during the time in high school I taught myself everything about computer repair because I thought it would benefit me for college. Suddenly I went from learning computer repair to actually repairing computers. I then started my own business around the community in my area. Even though the business was not that much of a success my counselor said it would look excellent on my resume. Flashing back to the point where my counselor met with my parents, after that I started looking at any clubs that interest me that will also be helpful. I now will be on the diversity club for our school during my senior year and I also have only a couple of hours left until I apply for NHS. Hopefully this will help me out!
Although my high schedule was screwed up at first I was still able to maintain a 4.0 gpa and a weighted gpa of 4.4286. I am also ranked in the top 10% if not 5% of my class. I will hopefully increase my ACT score but up to now it is 28. I have also volunteered in my uncle's clinic (he is in internal medicine) for about a year now only on the weekends though. I have also achieved a science department award from the school district along with a Principal's Honor Roll every single semester in high school. I have also taken the AP Bio test but I have not received my scores yet.
Can anyone please help me out with any suggestions? Is what I am doing right or wrong? Am I looking above my capabilities if I apply to this school? Do you have any recommendations on how to help me extracurricular reputation? Should I keep my goal set to this school? I also want to have an idea of how hard the work is in the school? I know that it is accelerated. Will it be better for me to go into pre-med then med? HELP HELP HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks

UMKC’s program is difficult to get into, but here’s some info I pulled off their website. I don’t know how to do links, but I just google’d umkc 6 year medical school

min. 3.0 unweighted GPA
college prep curriculum
leadership ability (not required, but recommended)
interest in medicine (also recommended) through volunteer work, shadowing, etc.

Avg. Missouri accepted applicant: 29 ACT, 3.81 GPA
Out of state accepted applicant (avg): 30 ACT, 3.85 GPA

sounds like you’d be a competitive applicant, just from what I know. I’m no expert, but I know a few people who applied, and a couple who were accepted.

How do you have a 4.4 gpa? You have hardly taken any AP courses. If your school weights honors courses, then I’m not too sure whether the college will consider that weight… anyone have any ideas about this?
