I need help! Chances for some pretty decent schools?

So I'm a junior at a relatively competitive private school in South Florida, but we don't rank (luckily for me). My brother went to Michigan with a $20k scholarship, which may help and this is probably my number one school. I am hispanic, but since Michigan doesn't do affirmative action anymore, this probably won't help.

My freshman grades were horrible (All B's and a C)
My sophomore grades were All A's and 2 B's
My junior grades so far are 3A's and 3B's (1 is borderline)

I also heard that Michigan doesn't look at Freshmen grades, which is great for me.

GPA: 3.73

I've never taken a regulars class in my school, and have been in all honors the entire way, this year I am taking two AP's, AP Biology and APUSH
I'm planning on taking AP Enviro, AP Gov, and AP Calc AB next year, since I'm taking Calc Honors this year.

My SAT scores: Over two test dates
CR:670
M:640
W:720 (11 Essay)
Superscore: 1310/2030

Extra Curriculars:
-Volunteered at Memorial children's center for 20 weeks, 2 hours a week. (Sophomore) (Junior)
-Went 4 years in a row to Congres (French competition in Orlando)
-Part of Friends of FRAT, went to autistic child's house for 20 weeks, 2 hours a week. (Sophomore)
-Volunteered at Kesher, a program that provides a an education for children with learning disabilities from pre-school through high school. (Junior)
-Head of snack food drive for children at the respite shelter in Women in Distress of Broward County. Collected over 600 individual snacks. (Junior)
-Volunteered for a month in Fiji, heading various projects for rebuilding communities and the environment. (56 hours, 2009)
-President of HELP Club, for underprivileged children and battered women (Junior)
-Vice President of FRAT (Fostering Relationships with Autistic Teens and Children) (Junior)
-Treasurer of Green Team (Freshman)
-NHS Member
-NFL (National Forensic League) Member

I'm planning on my essays and recommendations to be great.
I want to major in either Environmental Engineering, or Environmental Architecture, but this is subject to change.

Some schools I'm considering (In order of preference):
University of Michigan
University of Southern California
UC- Berkeley
Georgetown University
Northwestern University
University of Florida
University of Wisconsin
Cornell University

is that GPA weighted?

im pretty sure, but it could be unweighted also

well with your freshman year grades, I would find it kind of hard for it to be unweighted.

the upward trend is nice. good ec’s (you’ve shown passion for helping children). I would retake the SAT to bring up your Math score. Also look into the SAT II. Does your school rank? You’re only a junior, so for now you should just focus on performing your best in the classes you have! With a 2100+ you seem like a good candidate for the schools on your list! UCB and Michigan are very difficult OOS. Make sure you shine through with your essays. Good luck!

yea but i have legacy at michigan, so will it still be that hard?

I’d say Cornell and Northwestern are reaches, and I’d put UM and UF as matches.

You’ve gone to Congres? I live in Orlando, and I’ve gone to it for the past two years. Weird!

University of Michigan - Low Reach
University of Southern California - Low Reach
UC- Berkeley- Mid Reach
Georgetown University- Mid Reach
Northwestern University- High Reach
University of Florida- Saftey/In
University of Wisconsin- Saftey/In
Cornell University- Mid Reach

By the way, Michigan stopped its old GPA policy. They now look at your entire GPA provided on your HS transcript.

Flipper-

do they look at your weighted or unweighted GPA?

kmg3448-

do u think congres looks good for colleges?

I hope it does! If you get a Superieur in whatever event you compete in, then I suppose it would look quite good, or if you go several years in a row and do well every year.

ozfried, they look at your weighted if it is presented on your transcript.

here is a more thorough description of their new policy: [Office of Undergraduate Admissions: GPA Recalculation FAQs](http://www.admissions.umich.edu/gpa/)

flipper,

thanks for the response, i was also interested in the university of texas at austin
i am interested at pursuing an engineering major and was wondering if my stats are good enough for admission at the cockrell school of engineering at UT?
thanka

I think UT Austin would be a low reach for you. To be more competitive for engineering schools you should try to get a 700+ on the SAT Math or a 30+ on the ACT math. Being a URM helps you a lot and I’ve taken that into consideration when chancing you. Also, try to do some engineering related extracurriculars. See if you can get an engineering internship or join an engineering club to demonstrate your passion.

ummm yea i got into michigan and my gpa is like a 3.1 haha youll be fine for michigan at least

michigan - high match
need higher gpa
cornell - definitely a reach

i’d use your ed on a school like vanderbilt. or maybe consider ED 2

look at GTech. (recommended to me by G.P.Burdell) It has a great engineering program. May be a slight reach, but the lack of girls may be intriguing to you.
