Today I got rejected for NYU and I'm a huge failure because I never looked for a second choice school.. Help me find one?? I would very much prefer an urban setting. (like that of New York City) I want to major in writing or english, maybe playwriting. I live in Iowa but I want to get out of my small town and make something by myself. Also, study abroad is a deal breaker, especially study abroad in Paris. Thanks, I could really REALLY use your help.

Some stats..

Basically, I have a 3.2 GPA from a very difficult private school in Iowa. I got a 30 on the ACT.

I've been in all honors courses through high school, and taken two AP classes (English Grammar and Writing and US History) and I am taking AP Government and Psychology this year.

Rhodes? I wouldn’t call Memphis “like NYC”, but it is urban, and there’s a great theater scene. The english major has concentrations in writing including creative writing. Most of the students study abroad, Paris is definitely a destination, and one of the history professors specializes in Paris. Your stats are a match - GPA below average but ACT above average.

Virtually EVERY school has study abroad programs…and Paris would certainly be an option.

What is your budget? How much will your parents pay?

Your budget is likely going to determine where you should apply since most schools don’t give much aid. Your GPA is on the low side for schools that give great aid or merit.

If you don’t mind its small size, Goucher might interest you: [Goucher College: Transcending Boundaries](http://www.goucher.edu/). Baltimore is certainly not New York, but neither is it Iowa; being in the suburbs, Goucher is certainly not in the heart of Baltimore, but neither is it in the middle of corn fields or (what we have more of in Maryland) horse farms.

You should have definitely applied elsewhere, because now you are going to have less opportunity at other schools. I’m assuming that if you could afford NYU, you can afford another private school (but that is just an assumption on my part). I would look into these 2 for starters:
*DePaul University (Chicago) - which offers a BA in Playwriting according to CollegeBoard, and is in a major city. Application deadline is February 1st, so I would get on it.
*Butler (Indianapolis) - I know many people who are happy with their Butler education, and they offer a Creative Writing degree. App. deadline is February 1st.

I filled out applications, including one for DePaul’s playwriting program! But I didn’t send any because of the ED agreement. Also, I visited Iowa and I just hated the atmosphere there… So it’s crossed off for that reason though I understand it has a wonderful writing program.

It doesn’t sound like he could afford NYU. In another thread the OP complained that his NCP wouldn’t fill out the FA paperwork.

So…this is important!!! How much is your budget? How much will your family pay? If your family won’t pay much then you won’t have many options.

BTW…if money was a concern, you never should have applied to NYU - especially as your “only choice”. NYU wouldn’t have likely given you the aid you needed if you had been accepted.

One I’m a “her”… Lol. Also, finances aren’t really a problem. It is required for all applicants that want FA to fill out the NCP. The problem is that I haven’t talked with my father in years and they said they wouldn’t even consider aid for me if they didn’t have it. Not that it matters now. And as I said, I’ve filled applications I just haven’t sent any yet. Thanks for all the suggestions though! Very helpful!

If money is no object, maybe Boston University? Has a lot of what you want including a foreign study center in Paris. Their University Professors program is sort of a college within the university where you could do some interdisciplinary study and work more closely with profs.

*Also, finances aren’t really a problem. It is required for all applicants that want FA to fill out the NCP. *

There seems to be a disconnect here. If “finances aren’t really a problem,” then why are you applying for financial aid? If you need FA in order to afford college, then finances are an issue.

If your dad won’t likely be contributing, then how much will your mom pay?
