I am planning to transfer to four year school to pursue chemical engineering, I have applied to all of the above schools; except for the university of Minnesota-twin cities, the other two are yet to make their decision-something they will do towards the end of this month. I have been accepted to college of science and engineering @ UofMN but I needed somewhere warm with less snow. I know I have better chance of getting into either UCBerkeley or Georgia Tech but in these two colleges I will be paying out of state tuition which is quite expensive. When i googled the cost of living in the cities these schools are, Atlanta was cheaper than the rest. UC Berkeley has better reputation than either of them, UofMN will have pocket friendly tuition because I will be paying in-state tuition. Which of these school should I choose if I get accepted to all of them?

Yeah, Berk is ridiculous when it comes to living expenses but the Bay Area is so awesome (I believe you get what you pay for).

Berkeley is a great school, and I’m one of those people that wouldn’t mind going into debt if the experience was worth it. I’ve been to UCB before, and it was during the summer when there weren’t many students around, but I loved it. Not to say that you will too, but it really is a great college town/area.

If I got into all three and could afford all three, I’d pick Berkeley…but I’m also an SF Giants fan and couldn’t turn down seeing games every weekend

How much do you estimate your debt to be if you go to GT or UCB?

It will be 102k, is there any difference like start off salary for graduates from these school?

How, exactly, do you propose to borrow that kindof money? Do you have your co-signers lined up already?

Go to [FinAid! Financial Aid, College Scholarships and Student Loans](http://www.finaid.org) and run the loan repayment calculators. You will quickly understand why most adult will tell you that no undergrad degree is worth that kind of debt.

What would be smart choice suppose u you were in my position?

Technically, doing Chemical engineering in a Texas college is a better option for job prospects if interested mainly in chemical industry. Most of the major Chemical Industries are in Houston and nearby towns.

God, don’t go to Georgia Tech. I transferred out last year and I haven’t looked back. UC Berkeley all the way!

A friend of mine told me that I can be able to take some Masters classes while I am an undergrad. He also said that graduate from GT earns $1000 more than graduate from UC Berkeley. Can someone please help validate this or refute. Thanks.

Georgia Tech only suits very specific types of people. There’s very little sense of community and you often find the words “GT sucks!” and “Tech is a joke” scrawled on the inner walls of its library.
I’m currently a freshman at Georgia Tech and I’m planning on transferring out. Its chemical engineering program would probably suit your needs, but if you are looking for a lively student body or an environment that would foster academic interests outside of science and engineering, you should probably look elsewhere.

I think this is a moot point since you haven’t been accepted yet, but I’ll play.

Go to the FA forum and ask what the payments will be on a 100k loan, someone there will know. The answer will then be crystal clear.

Thanks for the suggestion that I use the financial aid loan calculator. I have done that. What I have noticed is that, I will be paying $250 monthly for 10years. This seemed like ages, is this choice worth 10 years of giving away part of my labor?

Remember that $250 each month is after taxes. You will need to make more like $375 each month in order to have that available.

UMN has an excellent reputation for Chem. Eng. Unless you need to go to a warmer climate for your health, you probably are best off saving your money and graduating from UMN. There are many more things that you probably would like to put that $250 each month for ten long years toward!

I just got accepted to GT, now closing fingers for Berkeley then a decision need to be made!
