I have recently been admitted into the following schools and majors. I applied for Computer Science at most of them
UCI-Undeclared
UCSD-Mathematics - Computer science
UCD- Waitlisted
UCSC- Admitted
UCR- Computer Science
UCSB- still waliting on notification
CPSLO- Software Engineering
SJSU- Software Engineering
SDSU- Computer Science
My top choices were UCSD, UCI, and UCSB.
My question is should i attend one of those schools but not be in Computer Science and try to switch into the program, or choose one of the schools I have been admitted for computer science?
Don’t know what the process is for switching into CS at UCI, but Math-CS is in pretty high demand at UCSD. Employers often confuse it with two separate degrees, and it prepares you to think a little differently than pure CSE but still teaches you a lot of the necessary skills.
I’m just afraid of the rigor because of what I have read it is more geared as a math major than in preparation in Computer science.
You can call UCSD Admissions and/or call the CS advising department directly - they will be straight up with you about chances of changing. In the case of some engineering majors, on the website it will say there is no chance to transfer into this or that impacted major and it is best to attend another school if this is the major you want and weren’t directly accepted. You need to know if that is applies to CS going in, in which case you may want to be somewhere you are straight CS if that is what you really want and feel the other program is too math based. Was UCSD #1 for you? What is #2?
If you’re interested in CS, pick either ucsd or calpolyslo. Based on your concerns regarding too much theory/math, I’d pick slo.
UCSD was my #1 but if UCSB offers me my major I’m happy going there. The only reason I am no longer considering SLO is because they want me to loan $15,000 a year but the UC’s are only around $7,000.
