I need help finding a MT college.

Hi there I’ve been trying to find MT colleges to apply to that are right for me. There are plenty of great colleges out there but I don’t want to attend them simply because they are great. I’d really appreciate some thoughts on this as the people I know don’t know about MT colleges.
So if you’d be willing to help please read on I’ll list what I’m looking for in a college and such. J

I really like the sound of a BFA, the great intensity and involvement in theatre and it’s studies sound really great to me. I love theatre and I’m sure I’d enjoy it all.
However I think it’s important to have a well rounded education as I personally want to be a well rounded human being. It’s important as an actor to be knowledgeable about more than just the theatre. I love History and English classes but I’m not that big on Science and Math.
So I’m not sure if I should be doing a more flexible BFA, attend a college with a focus on both theatre and academics, or take a BA with another major.

As well as acting I’m interested in Costume Design (designing AND sewing costumes) and I would be interested in taking some course on that. I don’t know if that’s possible with just a major in MT but I’d really like to.

I’d also like to attend a college that allows/has study abroad. I’m interested in going to England for a semester or even a whole year.

I’d like to stay within New York state and if I have to maybe Pennsylvania and Vermont. The colleges being near a city isn’t that important to me.

Internships would be nice.

My family doesn’t make much money so I’ll be paying for college myself thus a college with great financial aid would be very grand. (I’ll be a first generation student.)

Now I suppose I should mention some things about myself.

I’ve been in nine productions since the age of twelve with a local low-budget theatre organization. I have co-directed a one act play with said organization. I have also done costume design (sewing and designing) for four productions.

I have volunteered at a good amount of places during my high school years.

My GPA is 3.5. I’m home schooled. (I’m still waiting on my SAT scores)

I think I have strong acting skills, a good singing voice and somewhat weaker dance skills. (I took dance as a young child but it’s been a while since. I do love dance though and I look forward to getting back into it.)

That’s all I can really think of if you need any more deciding factors let me know and I’ll get back to you.

Thank you for reading this and I hope to see a response from you.

Very grateful,
Miranda

My D is a junior and we are in the beginning of searching for a college/university. She likes the BFA and that does seem to keep the english as part of the gen ed classes you need to take along with a little history and some have science w/lab and minimal math. Ithaca does have a semester abroad typically in the fall of your junior year which definately peaked my D’s interest. I’m sure there will be a lot of people that are far more versed in a lot of requirements that will answer you…this is what we have found so far. Good Luck on your search!

I think you would be happy with a BA, to study all aspects of theatre, including costume, to do a study abroad. It’s my opinion what you put in, you get out of the theatre major! New York school, good theatre, affordable, BA…may I suggest my own school, SUNY Fredonia?

I think a BA is a better fit for you as well. The SUNY schools are very affordable. Research which schools have theatre programs. Without knowing your SAT scores and more particulars about your academics I am not sure if you will get a merit scholarship. Will you qualify for financial aid?

I agree with the above comments that it sounds like a BA in Theatrical Studies would fit you best. This way, you could study Acting, take voice lessons and dance classes as well as study costume design and other design aspects. If you note on your application and application for financial aid that you will be paying for college yourself, that will be an important factor in you getting grants, etc.

Best of luck; I hope this helps!

Thank you all for your helpful advice. I appreciate it so much!
I’ve been thinking things over and researching colleges some more based on your advice and I think I will pursue a BA degree. :)

I’m thinking about applying to Wagner, Muhlenberg, Sarah Lawrence, Nazareth College, Skidmore, and Marymount Manhattan. Possibly Russell Sage and Le Moyne. (Oh and maybe SUNY Fredonia  )
Any thoughts?

Should I still apply to some BFAs to create a mix. Perhaps some academically inclined ones? The only ones I could find suggested as such were NYU and Emerson. I think those might be reaches for me though.

That’s all I can think of to mention. My mind is sort of melting with all the information I’ve been in-taking today…

Thanks again!

I don’t know if she still posts, but around this time last year, Snapdragonfly posted a lot about her D’s search for a program that would include both MT performance and costume design. If I remember, her D won some pretty prestigious awards for costume design and was very interested in pursuing it in college. You might PM her to see if she has any suggestions. Good luck!
