I need help finding good fashion merchandising schools!!!

My sister wants to go into fashion merchandising, and I am trying to help her out. Can some body please recommend me good fashion merchandising schools with relatively low tuition & fees.

These are what I have so far:
1) Fashion Institute of Technology
2) Kent State University
3) SUNY Oneonta
4) Buffalo State College
5) Youngstown State University.

Since many, if not most, students change their majors at least once during their college years, your sister would be best served by making sure that she applies to schools that she’d be happy at even if she decides fashion merchandising isn’t for her. She might also benefit by being a little less tightly focused in her first few years by looking for a school with, say, good business programs, which she can combine with fashion or arts courses. It’s a big world out there and she may find lots of things in addition to fashion merchandising that capture her imagination. And if there are no fashion merchandising jobs waiting for her when she graduates, she will have a skill set she can use and work her way into positions that bring her closer to her goal over time.

What is her budget? How much will your parents spend each year?

Her most affordable choice will probably be an instate public that she could commute to from home.

If your parents will pay for tuition, room, board, etc, then she may have more choices depending on how much they’ll pay.

I agree with the above post…she should go to a school that is good in many majors in case she changes her major later. And, yes, she should consider some business classes as well. FM doesn’t pay much.

I guess I left a few integral parts out regarding her current circumstance. She will be applying as an international student; she will have to pay out-of-state tuition.

Our budget is limited, but at max we can do net price of $30,000, which includes tuition, fees, room & board, personal expenses, and etc. Any decent school under that price will suffice.

Also she has no luxury of changing her major later due to financial issues, and a lot of those fashion merchandising course credits do not seem to transfer.

Since American college students don’t declare a major until the start of their 3d year of college, why couldn’t she change her major? The last two years of college is generally more than enough time to complete all but the most demanding majors. No reason for her to commit to fashion merchandizing or anything else before then. And since she will be fulfilling distribution requirements her first year, almost all of those will transfer to another major. Sounds like you might not be quite clear on how the American college system works - it is nothing like the European system where you apply for a specific subject and are required to complete your degree in that subject.

Marist College may be a good option – it is cheaper than many private colleges but she will still need to get aid to make it work financially.

A friend at work has a daughter going to Kent for fashion, and she absolutely loves it. From she what she tells me, the school has great opportunities for study abroad programs in the fashion realm as well.

I appreciate everyone’s input and time.

M’s Mom, I’m quite well aware of how the American system works as I’m currently studying Pharmacy in the States. My concern is that some of these schools with fashion merchandising major might not accept credits from other schools. Also, FIT’s fashion merchandising curriculum, for instance, provides courses such as Intro to Fashion Industry, Fashion Business Practices, and Fundamentals of Textiles the first year. I don’t think regular 4-year colleges offer such courses. I don’t want her to spend extra time and money just so that she can make up for courses she could have taken in the first place.

happy 1, I looked up that school a long time. Marist’s upcoming year’s cost of attendance is $42,690.00, and that is just tuition and room & board alone.

momto2013grad, I too think that Kent is a great school for that particular major. The school, however, is slightly out of my family’s budget.

Please feel free to share more information if possible.
