I need help finding less-known schools.

Hi there, I'm Jae. C: I'm a high school sophomore as of yet, and definitely starting early. B) I have two siblings who are both seniors and involved in their college hunts, and it's making me kind of anxious. I'm looking at colleges, and all I've found that I really love are kind of big-name, like Wesleyan and Brown.

I get mostly As in school with a smattering of Bs, and maintain a 4.0 GPA. I'm involved in quite a few extracurriculars.

I'm interested in psychology, law, animal sciences, foreign language, and education-based (especially foreign language) majors, or possibly a create-your-own type of deal.

I'd love schools in California as most of my family lives out there, but anywhere is good. If you know of any good schools in these majors that might be less of a reach for me, I'd really appreciate if you'd share.

EDIT: I've tried using the college search function...I get thousands of results and I can't tell much about them!

Reed in Portland, Whitman in Wahington and some of the Claremomt Colleges in CA strike me as possible west coast options in the Brown - Wesleyan mode.

Hi…

It’s never too early to start looking…

California state schools are hard to get into out of state (they can also be very expensive as an out of state resident).

Is money no object? If you’ll need financial aid, then you’ll need a strategy for that since out of state publics don’t generally give financial aid to non-resident students. However, some will give merit scholarships to non-residents. Hence, the need for a strategy if money is a concern.

What do you want in a campus/school?

big
small
quiet
rah rah big sports
honors college on campus?
greek systems as an option
Catholic schools ok?
single sex
co-ed 50/50 split
rural setting
big city setting
collegetown setting
nice dorms
recreation availability
warm weather
cold/snowy weather

U Redlands might be worth a look as a match or safety. It has a very interesting division that allows students to create their own program of study (different from the create-your-major at most colleges), and those students receive written evaluations rather than traditional grades.

It’s more conservative than Wesleyan, however. (As are most schools.)

I agree with mom2collegekids; you need to give us a little more to go on.

But if you’re interested in Wesleyan and Brown, I think you might like Occidental College in Los Angeles and Pomona College, which is a reach for just about everyone.

instead of doing a general search using the name of the college, go to this page and you’ll see the individual college threads:

hopefully that helps?

There’s a “similar schools” feature on the Prncetn Review site (which College Confidential blocks if we spell it out fully for you here). Just look up Brown or Wesleyan, then browse the “similar schools” list shown on the left.

Hey,

I made this thread a while back that might help: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/wesleyan-university/407021-if-you-like-wes-you-might-also-want-consider.html</a></p>

Some schools in Cali from that list are Pomona, Pitzer, and Occidental. The latter two are less selective than Wes/Brown. Some other West Coast schools are Reed, Lewis+Clark and Evergreen State.
