I need help in deciding (CPSP program)

I'm really unsure about what I should do---I'm interested in the Creative Premedical Scholars Program, but by entering it, I must give up my AP exam credits. I have a 5 on both AP Chemistry and AP Calculus....and I feel like it'll be a waste if I don't use them. Is it really worth it to take the Creative Premedical Scholars Program? :( I'm gonna be a Freshman this coming year btw.

Why do you have to give up your AP credits? I don’t understand what you mean. Tulane still gives you credit as if you took freshman chem and calc. Of course if you are pre-med the chem is lost to you anyway. Med schools require that you take freshman chem at a university, they don’t count AP as a substitute. But there is no reason you cannot take the Calc credit and take a higher level math course. You just cannot major in a science if you want CPSP, but you still have to fulfill Tulane’s distribution requirements.

Sorry that was poor wording on my part about the “giving up AP credits” there. What I meant was that I am worried “not receiving credits” for those courses. (I feel like I’d taken those AP exams for nothing). Thank you for your explanation, though :)

Every pre-med that took AP classes experiences the same thing as far as “wasting” the credit. Taking the AP classes was NOT a waste though. You will be so much better prepared for your college chem class with AP chem under your belt - making that “A” so much easier to make. :)

FC is correct

In the sciences, they will ususally want you to take the college course, both if you plan to stay at Tulane for med school and especially if you do not

I also took AP chemistry and AP Calculus (AB).

I’m pre-med, however I’m a science major. I’m retaking general chemistry of course :frowning:
It really wasn’t a waste since you probably now have a good background in Chemistry (Easy A?) It is kind of annoying because with a 5 you could get 8 chemistry credits out of the way.
Like Fallen Chemist said, if you’re pre-med you need to retake the Chem.

I’m taking Consolidated Calculus which is a “course that begins with a 3-week review of Calculus I, then covers all of Calculus II.” I believe you get credit for both Calc I and Calc II if you make a B or higher. Maybe that could be something you could look into.

From a student who had previously considered the Creative Premedical Scholars Program –

This probably isn’t a direct answer to your question about the credits but I wanted to give some input on whether the program itself is worth it. The AP classes you took, regardless, aren’t wasted as the knowledge and experience from those classes will help you so much in the equivalent collegiate class.

However, I believe the nature of the Creative Premedical Scholars Program is this. You either knew you wanted it, or you don’t want it. Quite simply, to me, it seems prepared for the student who wanted a definite university and a definite career path. You ought to be be comfortable with Tulane Medical Uni and its philosophy/campus/cost/affiliations very early because you must theoretically choose to commit within the first two years, in order to get the correct, as well as the rigorous, schedule. It is basically a sacrifice of an easier College fr/so year for the early MCAT acceptance. There are, of course, the Pre-Med students who are comfortable taking Physics and a Chemistry together, and the ability to choose the program is just a bonus, not a sacrifice. I noticed, however, that most of my peers aren’t quite as prepared for the courses as they expected coming into Tulane.

It is, of course, possible that you may be accepted into the program but enter a different medical school, but that seems to defeat the point/advantage of the program (MCAT-less early acceptance) that you had to sacrifice a lot of time for (early fulfillment of science prereqs). This seems really long-winded, but honestly, saying that you want this program seems to shoehorn you into a very specific college track. If you were to want ANYTHING else outside an education at Tulane Medical Center, your first two years probably would have been far easier without the Creative Premedical Scholars Program.

I’m giving up my 5 AP Chem and AP Calc for the program. Cuz I know this is what I want and more or less the only chance I can get into medical school, considering my international status. But if you want more credits instead of retaking classes for higher GPA, you may not think the program is worth it.
