I need help on how to proceed with UCLA

Hello! I’m in a bit of a pickle. I got into UCLA yesterday and I realized there was a pretty significant error on my application that may get me rescinded. With my luck, they take 10-15 days to respond to emails and I have to accept or decline my spot at UCLA by Tuesday night.

On top of that, I couldn’t call them today since it’s Friday and I’m certain admissions is closed this Monday as well. The one day I could call is the very Tuesday when I have to give them my decision.

My dilemma is that I’ve SIR’ed to my safety school. And I believe if I SIR to UCLA knowing I may get rescinded, and retract my SIR from my other school, I’ll be screwed and be left without a college to attend this Fall.

Basically I need some serious advice. What should I do? Will UCLA extend my time to decide if I call them on Tuesday, at least until I know whether they’ll rescind me? What would you do in this situation?

@Gumbymom

Since your decision timeline is very short, all you can do is call admissions and try to work with them. Depending upon the mistake, they could extend your decision deadline or give you an idea if they could rescind your acceptance. Best of luck.

I could be wrong - but just because you committed to another school and paid a deposit, you can withdraw. You’ll lose your deposit. You won’t be the first nor the last.

Was the safety school another UC? Perhaps then it will matter.

I don’t think UCLA will care that you committed elsewhere.

I don’t see an issue - you got in yesterday. It’s like a kid who accepts school A and is on the waitlist of school B - and they get off the waitlist in the summer and decide they want to go to the waitlist school.

Or am I missing something here?

Not a pickle at all…just a risk of some lost funds.

Now - your concern is the “error” on your app - perhaps if the error is egregious/impactful, then stick with your safety. Or let UCLA know and then wait for them to decide after they review - and if they’re done with the review and still admit you, then you’ll walk from the safety at that time.

Good luck.

It shouldn’t take 10-15 days for them to reply. In our experience (in the past month) they have replied the next working day. I would submit your concern as soon as possible so that it is documented early. Don’t be vague or use hypotheticals on the contact us form. State the facts and give them as much information as possible.

Don’t withdraw from your other school until you have, in writing, that your acceptance to UCLA is still valid.

I wouldn’t wait until Tuesday. It is often difficult to get through on the phone. Send your message through the Contact Us portal and if you don’t receive a reply Tuesday morning, you can try to call.

Can you share what your significant error is? It might not be as significant as you feel it is.

I’m not sure I see what the problem is. Did you lie about something in on the app? What is the error? If the error is bad enough to cause a problem at UCLA, it’s bad enough to cause a problem at the school you deposited at. Regardless, get it sorted out. But we might be able to put your mind at ease if you tell us what the error is.

I did not lie on my app. I am just dumb and somehow overlooked 3 courses on my transcript. Then when they asked me to explain my education gap, I still missed 1 course. It is a big error but it won’t affect my safety school because it’s a CSU (different application) and somehow (luckily) I completed that app without any errors.

I’ll be sad if I get rescinded but I’d rather them do it knowing all the information.

Thank you! I was apprehensive about using the contact form because I felt like I had to call to get to the right person. I guess I just didn’t know who was in charge of all this stuff. I elaborated on my issue as a response to another comment.

This would be a great time for you to ask your guidance counselor to step in. They can explain the issue and it won’t end up sounding like an excuse. If it’s a class like gym or art, it probably doesn’t matter much anyway.

Rip. I think I’m screwed then. I’ve submitted two contact forms. 1st one frantic, 2nd one limited by the characters. I am a transfer student too and haven’t spoken with a counselor for a good month or so. I didn’t get any help on my UC application either. I should kiss my admission goodbye.

No, why don’t you just call and explain? Have you done that yet?

@Kit_Kat2, I hope you will follow Lindagaf’s advice.

Since this is causing you stress, I suggest writing out bullet points for reference during that conversation. Try to remain calm, be polite and cover the facts in a clear, unemotional and organized manner. It is fine to state how much you want to attend UCLA, but do not allow your emotions to cause the conversation to stray or come across as immature and unprofessional.

State the facts. Be polite. Remain calm. Do not use slang or call yourself “dumb”. Do not sound frantic.

You can do this! Good luck and let us know how it goes. :grinning:

I’ve been wanting to. I had gotten accepted on the 16th and I didn’t realize until late that night that I could get rescinded over this mistake. On Friday 's they don’t allow calls, nor on the weekends. Then today is a holiday so I can’t today.

I only can only call tomorrow and I believe they open up phone calls at 1pm. So it’s been a very long waiting game. I also am now worried that I am being too “extra”, sending them 2 emails, then calling them tomorrow. But I have to if I want to know if I’ll be rescinded.

Thank you. I’m nervous because I know I will likely be rescinded. However, I will be sure to update everyone about what they say.

Good luck, but what exactly did you do that you think was wrong? You forgot to mention a class on a transcript? Is that what the issue is? If so, did you get a good grade? If so, I would assume you would be fine; but, if not, perhaps that’s an issue.

Anyway, hope it goes well for you.

As you can imagine, I did fail it! So it looks terrible. Though I had also forgotten to add two other classes that I got a “W” and a “B” in. But in Feb they asked me to explain the education gap from a 2018 to 2020, but the one I failed was taken in 2017. I added the others but not the one I failed because SOMEHOW I didn’t think I had to. Till now. I screwed up bad and I know, I deserve to be rescinded.

p.s. I’m not trying to be like oh pity me! I know I messed up in not checking my application and by not looking into things sooner. I don’t blame them if they do rescind me.

So I called, waited in the 20+ person queue and when it was my turn I got sent straight to voicemail. I am calling once more but I don’t understand why they aren’t picking up. It’s the right time and hour…

Update: They answered my second call. They said they do not extend deadlines and that I would have to submit my SIR and wait till they contact me back regarding my email. They also said I needed to submit my transcripts anyway.

Alright guys you WON’T believe this. UCLA got back to me and said that I did report the grade. I am so happy but of course am shocked, especially after so much stress. I even printed out a copy of my application and the grade is NOT there. I guess I did report the grade maybe but I 10000% was sure I did not.
