So I filed a FAFSA 3 days ago and just received my SAR today. On the FAFSA, I marked that I am a US citizen. I was naturalized 4 years ago and have a Certificate of Naturalization to prove this and also a US passport. But on the comment section of my FAFSA it says this:

"The Social Security Administration did not confirm that you are a U.S. citizen.
Please provide your financial aid office with documentation of your U.S.
citizenship (such as your U.S. Passport, Certificate of Naturalization or Birth
Certificate). If the documents support your status as a U.S. citizen, the
financial aid office at your school will make a copy of your documentation and
can continue to process your federal student aid."

The issue is that I am a first-year applicant applying to over 10 universities. Is there a better way to approach this than just sending each university one of the items listed above? Should I wait for each university to request the items rather than sending it to all of them now? Will I receive a financial aid package with my offer of admission even if I do not do this now? I called FAFSA and one of my schools and neither really gave me a postive answer as to what to do. Anyone who faced this situation before wants to give their experience? HELP :(! All suggestions is greatly appreciated!

Your aid will likely be held up until you provide the necessary documentation, so call each school & ask them how they want you to proceed. I work at a school that deals with this issue ALL the time … we have tons of naturalized citizens. We ask for a copy to be brought in person, since we double check the picture against the student. If we have a student who can’t bring us the document, we ask for a notarized copy. Other schools may have their own policies, so please call.

Thanks for replying but should I wait after being admitted then call to ask and send because it would be very hectic and pointless to fulfill over 10 different schools’ requests when I am not sure if I will even get into all of them. Would they just not give me my package if I get admitted until I send them the stuff? If so, I can just wait for decisions to come out and see if they want me to send them the stuff or not to get my package. Would this work? If I go to change my citizenship status this week and file a correction on FAFSA soon after, would the SSA be able to verify my citizenship and wont have to send anything to the schools?

I guess that is up to you & depends on the schools. I work at a public university with rolling admissions. Students know their admissions status quickly.

What do you have to lose by sending the info to all of your schools? Only time and effort. What do you have to lose by hoping that “some colleges will overlook this and process my FAFSA anyways?” The very real risk that “some colleges” will NOT overlook it and you will get waitlisted for aid.

Stop complaining about paperwork and send supporting documents to every school that you want to eventually receive FA from.
