I Need Help with Entering College Classes on My Application

Can anyone help me with this portion of my application?

I took three college classes (French) during my junior year. The college was on the quarter system. Each college French class equated to two semesters of high school French. I am now trying to enter them onto the online CSUMentor application.

I am following these directions:

 1. If you took a college course for high school credit, select the college you took from the institution list. DID THIS
 2. Select “College” from the grade level dropdown. DID THIS
 3. Select the year. DID THIS
 4. Type in the class title. DID THIS
 5. For the term type, select “College course (one grade given per class)”. Only enter the grade you earned once in the appropriate term. THIS IS THE PROBLEM.

I took 3 quarters of French:
French 201: Took fall quarter 2009; I entered the grade in FALL quarter
French 202: Took winter quarter 210; ???
French 203: Took spring quarter 1010; I entered the grade in SPRING quarter

What is the appropriate term for the winter quarter??

I called Admissions and got a snarkly response that I should just follow the directions and that if I couldn’t follow the directions, perhaps I was applying to the wrong school… Wow! Maybe I wasn’t very clear on the phone…

So I wrote Admissions the following:
When listing baccalaureate-level courses taken at a college to satisfy
“a-g” high school subject matter, I am asked to enter the grade I received
into the term in which I took the college course. The college I attend operates
on a fall, winter, spring, summer quarter system. If I took the course in
the WINTER term (i.e., French 202), do I enter the grade in the fall or spring option?
For example:
French 201: Took fall quarter Entered grade in fall quarter
French 202: Took winter quarter Which term do I enter this grade?
French 203: Took spring quarter Entered grade in spring quarter

Here is their response:
If I’m not mistaken, I believe the instruction say to list courses like
that in the summer term. Here are the instructions from the application:
High Schools with a Quarter System: “If the four quarter grades convert to two semester grades on your transcript, enter the semester grades and select “Semester” as the term
type.” If four separate grades are recorded on your transcript, enter all four
grades into the Fall semester, Spring semester, Summer semester 1, and
Summer semester 2 and select “Quarter” as the term type.

Their response was fine, except these are COLLEGE CLASSES, not high school classes. I don’t have the option of quarters with college classes. I have to select Semester (which is the only option for college course), I still don’t have an answer!

Can someone please help? Are there better directions than what is listed on the CSUMentor website. I do not want to contact Cal Poly again…they know my name.

Thank you to anyone who has muddled through this!

bump

There has to be someone with college credit who is applying…

I’m no expert but am throwing out a few ideas.

Look at the hard copy of the application:

<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU;

In Section F 30, it suggests a way (only in F 30) to list your quarter credits.

In Section G 34, somehow you can list quarter units. I mention this because you may need to go back to this point (or an earlier place) and see how you listed your units. If you listed them under “semester” units, then later in your application, the software may not give you the option to list “quarter” units.

In Section G 35, take a look at the “Term and Year” and winter quarter is listed.

Now I’m going to the online instructions:

<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU;

On page 13, there seems to indicate a way for you to list either semester or quarter units. If this is the first time listing semester or quarter credits, be careful what you choose as later in your application the software may not allow you to input quarter units.

On page 14 College Courses (Baccalaureate Level), it says “Select…in the term type menu” which seems to mean you can indicate semester or quarter?

At the top of page 15 first paragraph, it seems to indicate that CSU is trying to somehow calculate ones’ college quarter unit credits to high school semester credits.

After all that, I assume there is a way for you to open up the “quarter units” menu, as you are not the only student struggling with this problem.

I suggest you go back into your application and check out previous pages. See if changing an earlier page will open up the “quarter” menu in a later page.

If that doesn’t work, ask your high school college counselor, as I’m sure they’ve encountered other students who have taken college quarter units for high school credits at your local college. It may help to bring a copy of the pages in question to your counselor. They may suggest a workaround (maybe what CPSLO suggested?)

If that doesn’t work or you want another opinion, try calling a different CSU, particularly one in your local area, as they will be used to answering questions from high students who have taken college quarter units from your college. Or call the community college (?) where you took your courses.

Good luck.

Hi Oklahomajrc,

Did you or anybody else eventually figure out the answer to this problem?
I am having the same problem…
