I need help with my college choices

I am from NJ and in 11th grade. I am white and I am Italian Irish and German. I have made a list of schools and I need help

1.UCSanta Barbra
2. Arizona State
3. University of Colorado, Boulder
4. Ohio State
5. University of Miami (FL)
6.Florida Atlantic University

I want to be a cop when I'm older but I want to major in physcology becasue they say you should learn to deal with people and the police department with educate you with their own criminal justice class. I want a school with a big social/party life but i DO NOT want a school where the Greeks run it. i have nothing against the Greeks but it is not what i am into. i take the SAT on january 25. my psat is a 1440 (low i know) and my gpa is a 3.7/3.8 i also plan to take the ACT. I dont want to stay in NJ and please give me options for other schools that fit what i would like. sorry for it being so ling and thanks in advance!

What can your family afford? Out-of-state publics are very stingy with financial aid for out-of-state students. In many cases, the cost to an OSS is just as high as a private university.

So, will you be needing substantial financial aid? Unless you get your stats up, you are not really in the running for merit scholarships. You need to have a conversation with your parents about how much they can afford to contribute each year.

the perfect school for you may very well be hendrix college…zero frats…amazing school, happy students , definitely not in NJ! visit and you will want to stay.

I know my states are a little low but i plan to get them up. My family is middle class so i know i will be debt a good amount when i graduate. Hendrix looked good but i dont want to be in the midwest. i want to stay along the coast or arzona or colorado for the most part. i dont care if ther is some Greek life, i just dont want it to be the center point of the whole college. i will be applying for loans and i wll need financial aid as well if yuou dont mind me asking what were your SAT scores

The most that YOU can borrow is $27K over the four years of college. Anything other than that will require a cosigner or your parents to borrow. Are they prepared to do that?

What’s wrong with all of the public schools in New Jersey?

UCB, I think this is the “grass is always greener” syndrome. Everyone wants to leave the state in which they grew up.

There is nothing wrong with the in state school such as Rutgers. I just want to experience something new in life. i want to try new things and who knows, maybe i will end up living out in the same state where i go to college

Or you can finish your education without putting your family in the poor house and move to another state after college.

If you want to go into police work, an honorable goal, it really doesn’t make much sense to spend a fortune on getting an education when ultimately, a degree from a local public will be worth exactly what an OOS public or an expensive private will be worth. And police officers aren’t exactly pulling down the big dollars, so dropping $200k on a degree is not the wise thing to do. At the very least, start running EFC calculators, and look for some cheap options, public or private, local or OOS.

Is joining the military and signing up to be an MP a viable option? You’ll be doing police work right from the start, can get the military to pay for your early coursework, if not your entire degree, and come out ahead of just about anyone else in terms of experience after four years, plus more money to complete college, and all debt free. Maybe it’s not for you, but it might be worth exploring that option.

Police officer pay can vary significantly between areas. Of course, cost of living varies as well.

John Jay has the criminal justice degree perfect for cops. Its just across the river, but a world of difference.

As a freshman, you’re only allowed to borrow $5,500 total for your first year. So if your family needs significant financial aid, you won’t be able to go to these schools.

Hendrix isn’t in the Midwest, it’s in the South. Note that on the other hand, Ohio State IS in the Midwest.

You’ll find partie at every college you go to. However be aware that in college partying every night often means you get put on probation (because college = 3-6 hours of hw a day depending on major and college difficulty so if you don’t put in the time, you don’t pass and there’s no extra credit, make up, etc. It’s on you) and if you keep at it, it means freshman year is the only one you’ll do. Parties all weekend long is the norm at most colleges so if that’s your goal, anywhere you go should be fine. But hopefully you want to graduate too :)

If you want to go out of state, look for private colleges where your current stats place you in the top 25% students to maximize financial aid (if your stats improve, it means you’ll definitely get a preferential financial aid package at a private university).
The only public university on your list where you may get some merit aid is FAU. The others simply won’t be affordable so remove them from your list.
You should find 3-4 more like that '(matches) and 2 safeties (likely NJ public universities).

sorry i have not answered in a bit. i have midterms this week and i have been studying ALOT!! I dont understand how you can only have a certain amount of financial aid for one year. my sister started her freshemen year at Fordham which is $60k but recieved a total of $108,00 in aid and scholarships. I fi i really wanted to go to an OOS school such as CU Boulder (example) could i just apply for any scholarship i am able to. I forogt to mentian i have 120 Hours of Community service, runt rack for 4 years, and i am in 2 community service clubs. Also, i had Monmouth University on my list for instate but i took it off because i heard only rich snobby (i know not all rich are snobs but im saying what it said) attend there. is any of this valid? thanks!

There is no limit on financial aid, there is a limit on loans. Loans you have to pay back, so they don’t want to make it impossible for you to do so, since they aren’t dischargable in bankruptcy. The only escape from student loans is death.

I would guess your sister had better scores than you did for her scholarship. Fordham is a private U that can do what it wants with its funding. CU Boulder is a Public University supported by taxes from residents of the state of Colorado. Why would they give you any money? Some states have in-state scholarships available for students to attend colleges (in-state of course). Does NJ have that (like TAP in NY)?

i dont know if NJ has a program like that. she had better grades. SAT: 1850, she graduated valedictorian and a 4.0 GPA. Another school I’m interested in is ASU. thats a little cheaper but do they give more aid and scholarships then Boulder

Just for the record, Monmouth is a private school, not a state school.

byeByeNJ: financial aid at public universities is reserved for that state’s residents (and 4.0/2100SAT OOS students) and in addition the OOS fees make it really expensive.
So, no, there’s no financial aid to be had at ASU.
Public colleges that are OOS for you and still not too expensive would include UMN-Twin Cities, UMN-Morris, the SUNY’s, Truman State, Missouri School of Science and Technology, South Dakota School of Mines.
Other OOS publics are going to be very expensive.

FAU and FIU may give you merit because they’re not very well-ranked so your stats may qualify.

Run the Net Price Calculator on:
University of San Diego, Univerity of San Francisco, University of Portland, University of Seattle, Flagler, Eckerd.

Is that 3.7/3.8 unweighted? ASU would give you about $10k with a half-decent SAT score. (1100 math + reading range)
