so im planning to apply to UCLA out-of-state. I know my grades are pretty good for their standards, I just have one issue....

my extra-curricular activities.

I have some ECs:
6 honor societies which require me to volunteer often
DECA
HOSA
the health care program at our school (if you would even count that an EC)

But that's about it...except for ping pong club and cricket club. we all know how prestigious cricket club is...

but I haven't just sat at home and farted my whole high school career, I swear.

Once I get home from school I stay dedicated to music. hip-hop music. I produce, write, record, and mix all of my own music. I slave hours toward my craft, because I truly do have a passion for my work.

My question is...is there any way that I could convince colleges that I've been dedicating a lot of effort toward my craft? I know when most people think hip-hop, they think drugs, songs all about money, etc. But in all honestly my music preaches positivity, and I look at topics in a very poetic form. call me Kendrick Lamar of the Houston area.

but yeah, I've been dedicating my time to music, something I truly love. it's not that I'm lazy...it's just I have other passions. How can I still look good on my application when I don't have time for ECs? How can I show that my music is just as good as putting effort toward ECs?

I agree, that your music is an EC. You could even write your essay about the difference between the perception of hip hop and your experience. I don’t think there is a place on the common app for a music submission. But, I’d contact the admissions departments at the schools you are interested in and ask if they accept music supplements and, if so, what format it should be sent to them in.

Definitely include the music in the Activities section of the UC application and write about it in your UC personal statement. The UC personal statement should contain as many relevant FACTS about who you are as possible. As you may already know, UC does not accept the Common App.

@msheikhi UCLA received over 100,000 freshman applications this year. The odds are arguably not in anyone’s favor there, but very good grades, scores and ECs will certainly give you a shot at it. Good luck!

I don’t know about most college applications, but on the common app there’s a place to write an essay about anything else you think makes you stand out, but wasn’t mentioned anywhere else on the application

If you do apply to some common app schools, the additional info section isn’t really intended for essays. It is for brief comments on anything else you couldn’t find a way to include in the application. Now… the EC description space is tiny. So one way to use the additional info space is to say “see additional information section” on the EC description, then bullet out a list of activities related to music. And as @happy1 said, call admissions and ask how to submit a music supplement.
