I was wondering if someone could help me. My father is on disability and that is our family income for the time being. I’m not for sure how to fill out the parent part of the FAFSA. Would I put what he receives a year as the income or what would I put.? If anyone could help me that would be great thank you.
What kind of disability is he getting?
The reason @thumper1 asks is because how you report it depends on what type of disability it is. Is his disability SSDI or not? If not, is it taxable or untaxable disability? Does he file a tax return?
Was he on disability in 2015? You need to use his income from 2015, and if it has changed significantly for 2016, you may have to appeal any financial aid award you receive (or didn’t receive) from the colleges.
He does not file taxes @kelsmom
@twoinanddone he was receiving the disability in 2015
Is it Social Security Disability?
Why kind of disability is this???
Your dad doesn’t file taxes…but to answer your question…we need to know…WHAT KIND of disability is he receiving?
It is correct that you need to know if it’s SSDI or if it’s private disability that is untaxed - or if it’s taxable disability, but if it’s an amount so low that no tax return is required.
Yes it is social security disability
Social security disability is not reported on the FAFSA. When you complete the FAFSA, your parent tax return status will be My Parents are Not Going to File (assuming no 2015 tax return was filed). Question #88 & #89 will be 0 if there is no income earned for work. If he has no income reported, it is possible your FAFSA may be selected for verification, but don’t worry about that - if that happens, your parent will need to request a statement of nonfiling from the IRS & you’ll need to complete some school forms.
Okay thank you so much! That is very helpful!!
