Hi everyone .. I'm 34 male and working currently as a foreman in a construction company . I want to change my career.
I was thinking of doing engineering .. I know I know I might be old for that .. but I really need a change ..

Now I'm really confused in choosing the right engineering program. ( civil, petroleum or aircraft ). My background is construction.

But I have passion in mechanical stuff.. To be Honest, Salary and job market would play a big part of my direction.

I seem to be lost and need a help in choosing the right one for me .any suggestion ? maybe some other eng program !

You may not need to select which discipline is for you right now. Are you going to start at a CC?

If you’re married with a family settled in one spot, selecting PetE may require relocating for your career. I would think that CivilE would apply anywhere. AeroE has more limited employment. What about MechE or EE? Or ChemE?

Because of your construction background, I would think that CivilE or ConstructionE or ArchitecturalE would be best.

First, congratulations on taking the leap! I don’t think you are ever too old to head back to school.

I would agree that your living situation could signifcantly impact your decision, but assuming everything is open, I would suggest looking at environmental engineering based on some research I did for my daughter. This has a strong base of civil engineering (so much, it is sometimes included in that department) along with some chemistry. Seems to involve time split between indoor and outdoor.

I don’t know anyone in this field but would love to hear his/her opinion. Another place to start might be the bureau of labor statistics occupational outlook handbook. This has some descriptions of typical work in a field, whether it is growing slower or faster than the average, etc.

Thanks… Ya I’m kinda lost and need to decide … I worked in several fields but came to my mind that I have to do something to secure my future … I have some civil eng friends and they told me to join engineering school. they r doing good … even some of them took management courses online which actually put them into management position!.. yea it is true… NEVER TOO LATE ! I will check and do some research about environmental engineering Thanks for the motivation

The first two years of most engineering programs are pretty similar. In fact you probably can get those first two years out of the way at your local community college. Pay a visit to the admissions counselors there, and ask about any articulation agreements for engineering majors.
