I need help!!

Okay here is the situation,
I just got accepted to Cornell University's CALS as a biological science major. I have completed all my requirement except Biology II with lab. Now in order for me to complete Biology II with lab, I would have to take it over the summer.

I could find no community college in Maryland that offer Biology II with lab. The only institute that I can find Biology II with lab is Morgan State University.

Now the problem is, it would cost at least ~$1,200. I and my parents are able to pay for it, however, it will be a big struggle for us.

Now, the other situation is that we now have no car, we have bad credit, no one in our family is willing to help us out, and my older brother and sister are being jerks and are not helping us out.

So, if we have two choices, try and get the car fix; if we do that, then I will not be able to pay for my summer course. We can pay for our summer course at Morgan State University; if we do that, then we would have no car and therefore it would be very difficult to commute there. So either way I will lose this financial battle. So the only thing I can think of is getting a loan for my summer course. My parents tried their best and do not want me to get a loan, but I don't see any other way.

So I was wondering, if Cornell is willing to give me a subsidize or unsubsidized loan for my summer course.

If I do get a loan from Cornell for my summer course, will my financial aid for the 09-010 year adjust or change? If so, is there a bank I can go to to get a student loan that will not charge me interest until I graduate from Cornell?

Please I really need help. My family is struggling workers everyday and I hate to see them like this. It not only affects them, but it also affects me and my little brother. My older brother and sister are being jerks and standing there watching us fall until we have no place to go.

Edit: Oh By the way, I commute to my current college, I do not live on-campus. Oh I do not know my financial package it, but I expect it to be almost to a full ride cuz my efc is 0 and my family makes 17k/year. I will not get my financial package until mid may.

I am not a FA expert, but there are many parents on the parent forum could probably help you out better. Why don’t you try to post there. When you do, let them know what kind of financial package you are getting from Cornell and maybe your EFC. Good luck.

dragon, call the finaid office at cornell and then look into scholarships and grants asap. a lot of them are for $1000 or $500 and if you write about your situation, i think you’ll be ok. next, see if you can take the bio course online and then only worry about taking the lab at the actual school. it might be cheaper and you won’t have to drive there. the last thing i can think of is calling morgan and asking them about financial aid for summer courses.
try calling your cals advisor, too. see about getting to cornell in the summer and taking the class there and moving in early. i don’t think this is very likely, but see what they say. explain exactly what’s going on.
good luck!

thanks for your advice everyone, I already have asked if Morgan State University give out some kind of aid for visiting students, but they said that it has to go through the institution in which I am taking the credit for (which is Cornell). I also believe that Cornell does not take online courses. That is what I heard from other posts and I believe I read it on their website. CALS admission and CALS registrar already knows that. I have no talked to Financial aid yet about my situation but I will tomorrow.

Damn. I would have recommended Online Courses, but it seems like you already checked that out. :(

Yeah, make sure you also ask this on the Parents forum, they will be able to help you out also. Talk to Cornell first, this is the main place everything is centered around, so I would go and ask them first. Call CALS Transfer Admissions AND Financial Aid. Another is your advisor, if you don’t know it by now I’m pretty sure you can call and they can send you over to one over the phone.

Like someone said, there are scholarships and someone in your situation definitely would have a good chance I would think, but you need to call right away on Monday, because you don’t want the course filling up or missing any deadlines for scholarships, registrations for the course, etc. Good luck!!
