I Need Informationa about the USCGA

Of course. I believe both NMMI and MMI accept non-academy sponsored students who pay their own tuition.

My guess would be “no” as the USCGA has no “investment” in you as they do a CGA Scholar.

That’s not saying your chances are not good, but your question asked “are they as good?”

Attending college, taking challenging swab-level courses, and re-applying to the following year’s class shows initiative, perservearance, desire, and I would expect it to be looked upon favorable by admissions.

What do you mean by taking “challenging swab-level courses”? what are swab level courses?

They are the type of course that swabs (freshmen) take at the Academy. Look at this link to get an idea of the core curriculum: [Academics - United States Coast Guard Academy](http://www.uscga.edu/display.aspx?id=548)

Click on one of the majors, then click on curriculum by year.

This message is mainly for Luigi, but feel free to answer…

Would it be better to attend a public college or MMI/NMMI for a year and then reapply for the Academy?

If someone know, How long does it take for the uscga admission office to upload a candidate’s pfe score. My son’s has not been update and it was mailed by the pe instructor directly to the school. It still isn’t showing up. I think there is a problem but my son said you are not suppose to call the academy for 2 weeks, so he is going to wait until 2-15-2010. Is this the way to handle it or should he be calling now?

Are you talking about a “self-prep” course of action in case you are not appointed?

I don’t really think the choice of college matters too much when “self prepping” as a non-CGA Scholar.

As long as you follow Haroldg48’s advice above – take appropriate courses (ones that are similar to the courses taken by the swabs (4/c) at the USCGA) and EXCEL at them – it probably makes no difference where you enroll.

The Lack List is not always up-to-date.

I don’t think an email to your AO would be out of line.

Your AAP can also check at his/her portal to see what info your son is lacking…

Yes, i’m talking about a “self-prep” course of action in case I do not get appointed.

What i was trying to ask was whether it would look favorably to the admissions office on whether i attended MMI/NMMI rather than a public university for one year before reapplying to the Academy.

If i excel in my swab level classes, will my chances of obtaining an appointment be greater?

How do i know exactly which class’s i should take if i’m forced to deal with this type of situation?

Already answered above.

Um, yes, your chances will be better. Excelling is always better than not excelling.

Haroldg48 posted the link above, I suggest you click it and learn.

FWIW…my son did the community college route for his “self-prep” year. He is now in the class of 2013. He did also pick up a new sport, retake his SAT’s and did well in typical 4/c classes.
Good luck. Lots of roads can lead to an appointment. Find the one that works for you.

Shellz,

What college did your son go to? How many years was he in college before joining the Academy?

I sent you a pm…

Hey it’s me again! I applied to the AIM Summer program a while back and at this point the CGA website says that the admissions office is filing the applications, and that I will get an email once my application has been filed. Well it is April 17th and still nothing, so I was wondering if anyone knows just what is going on.

Has anyone been notified if they got in already, or am I in a large group of people waiting to hear from the academy?

When has the academy notified the AIM applicants in the past?

Thanks!

Based on previous years, you should expect AIM decisions to begin to arrive sometime around 10 May.

Hello, I Have been reading all your posts regarding the USCGA for weeks. Finally joined forum. Awaiting AIM notification, everthing crossed, son is very excited but is studying 600 miles from home this semester so I am stalking the mail carrier for him!

My S is trying to “self prep” the summer prior to senior year. He is taking a college Algebra test to fill in some holes in his math background. His ACT wasn’t stellar. However his PSAT was much higher. Here is the question. Will this summer college course look like the prep it is or look remedial?
