I am senior at a small rural high school. I have safety and reach schools but only one match school. Can anyone give me suggestions? I want to go to a liberal arts school in pennsylvania, New York, or Ohio.
I have taken the most rigorous schedule available with 5 AP classes and 3 college classes. I have a 95.7 weighted gpa and around a 3.5 unweighted which doesn't appear on my transcript. I am in the top seven percent of my class. My act is a 28 and my sat is an 1860. I am retaking the act next month. I am a first generation college student.
I am president of one club, secretary of student government, and treasurer of science club. I am also on the leadership council, academic decathlon, and marching band. I have attended a leadership conference that is selective. I have also attended Summer programs for law and biochemistry. I have also done leadership and counselor training at a summer camp. I worked at the summer camp last summer. I plan on majoring in political science, public health, or molecular biology. I plan on going premed or prelaw.
I want a college with an intelluctual atmosphere as well.
Right now my list is
Reaches
Gettysburg
Case western
Hamiliton
Bucknell
Kenyon
American
Franklin and Marshall
Matches
Allegheny
Safety
Westminster college ( accepted)
Washington and jefferson(accepted)
Thank you

Intellectual atmosphere? Liberal arts college in PA, NY, and Ohio? Match for a 3.5, 1860 SAT?

Three words: College of Wooster

By the way, I would classify Gettysburg as a match, not a reach. If you are applying to Gettysburg and want to apply to another school like it, consider Denison University.

Would you be happy attending Westminster and W&J? If so why do you need a match school? You’re fine.

Holy Cross is SAT optional and meets 100% of demonstrated financial need.

^^FWIW, the Super Moderator’s question and comment seem silly to me.

Ohio Wesleyan and College of Wooster would indeed be good matches, as well as Muhlenberg. You could try Geneseo (may be a high match/ reach).

@CHD2013 Your post is rude and wrong. @Erin’s Dad’s question and comment are very relevant.

I suggest that you apologize to him.

Do you know how much your parents will pay? Do you know if you have 100% of the costs of your safety covered? If so, then fine. If not, then that school is not a safety.

Going a little farther, there’s Earlham in Indiana
I also think GeTtysburg is a match. Ohio Wesleyan, College of Wooster both sound like good matches

I think you’re underestimating yourself (which is very rare on this board lol). Several of the schools on your list I would classify as “matches” for you!

Thanks everyone for helping. I wouldn’t be happy at w and j. I applied before I visited and hated it when I visited. But they did give me a lot of scholarship money. I also applied to a state school as a safety but will not consider attending unless I am accepted to the honors program. I will look into the college of Wooster and Ohio wesleyan. Does anyone else have any suggestions?

If you are full pay, you may consider Miami Ohio, Rochester, RPI and Richmond.

What did you dislike about W&J? This way, we can recommend schools that AREN’T like it :p

@MYOS1634 I didn’t like the area it was in. The neighborhood nearby was kind of sketchy. We waited over an hour for an interview after our scheduled time. The interview went awful and the the interviewer seemed stuffy. After the interview we waited over an hour and a half for a tour and it was supposed to be right after the interview. The tour guide was arrogant and pretty much said that it was his safety school. He told us that he applied to Ivy League school and Washington and Jefferson and didn’t like the school at first. I didn’t like that they had such a big focus on sports. I thought some of the campus especially the dorms were run down. The school I really liked was Allegheny. I liked the aspect of unusual combinations and the lack of emphasis on sports. I liked how there classes are small and discussion focused. It seemed like the students there liked to learn and we’re passionate about their unusual combinations. The dorms were also really nice and it felt like there was a sense of community there.

I also think Gettysburg is a match, and also possibly F&M.

If you are full-pay, you might also look at Drew, in Madison, NJ.

Muhlenberg has a very good political science department, gets a very high percentage of their students into both medical and law schools, has small class sizes, doesn’t have a big Greek or sports scene, and is probably worth a look. Best of luck to you!

Sorry, but I stand by my comments. I guess I should explain though. The OP indicated that they’d been accepted to 2 safety schools and were considering a number of reaches and a match. The reason the OP needs a match is because they would be happier at a school other than the safeties. Its very common for applicants to apply to safeties that they’d be happy at, but still have a preference for other schools. I see no basis whatsoever for the moderator’s quote “You’re fine.”

It seems as though the moderator is discouraging the applicant from looking for what might be a better situation, just because they have acceptances. I think the advice is very poor and “silly” may be a n understatement. I also think the purpose of this forum is to elicit advice from a variety of people. The moderator certainly has the right to share an opinion and I have the right to evaluate it. I think its important to do so when the OP might make an error by folloeing the advice of someone who seems to have some status here.

@CHD2013 my recommendation was based on the frequent “presumption” that students Need safeties, matches and reaches. The fact remains if you’d rather attend your safety over your match schools then there is no real reason to apply to the match schools. The OP published an extensive list of schools s/he was already applying to. Adding on to matches just because makes no sense. And as we’ve seen other posters believe some of those reaches are actually matches.
