<p>^I agree with your general point, but the OP did not say anything about how much he/she liked the safeties. Without that information, I think its safe to assume that there are matches available that might be better fits for the applicant. Adding on the matches was not “just because” - it was to provide better alternatives than the safeties.</p>
<p>In general, applying to matches makes sense even if you’re already accepted to a safety. Obviously when the safety is preferred to any potential match it does not make sense to apply to a match (not the case here as far as we know).</p>
