I'm a student in senior year looking to major in computer science.
I have a 1790 sat and about a 3.12 GPA due to dysthymia causing ADD symptoms, I live on the east coast and I need to figure out where I can get accepted.
If anyone is willing to talk to me please let me know

My GPA is approximently 3.12
I've taken 12 honors and 4 AP classes (including my senior year)
My grades range from c+ to a-
I've only gotten two c+ during highschool and I plan to study VERY hard during my senior year to let colleges know I was struggling during my junior year and previous years as well but I'm overcoming my challenges and trending upwards.
Because computer science is a harder major I don't know how to catogorize the list into reach match etc
Which is why I need someone's help to tell me what's feasible.
I am retaking the SATs in October and hope to get a score closer to 2000..

I know I'm a very capable student. My best friend is a 2300 sat student who plans to go to Penn, and we both work on AP Physics together, and I've always been a quick learner, just not very motivated to work. I want to work now though. I hope to get straight As senior year.

My councilors and parents both think my "mild disability" as they call it will help my admissions process, and my ECs aren't greAt but
I've done band and gotten many awards and gotten into many honors bands and musical pit and jazz bands etc etc
Also did the frisbee team and I'm joining the robotics team this year as well.

Please help me consider what colleges are reaches or matches or if you have other colleges I should look into please mention them.
Thank you all.

How much can you afford?

@machovich my parents have saved well for my college funds. So ignore price right now because I should be ok.

We’ll you should figure out how much you can afford a year like I have a solid college fund but I can only afford 30ka year

I believe we went through this a while ago.

Let me reiterate why I think Rochester Institute of Technology is ideal for you

1) You will be immersed in a tech culture that allows you to focus on what you like
2) They have coop - you can learn in a variety of ways not all of which is book learning
3) You can probably get in
4) You have an opportunity to excel there if you are indeed a much better student than your stats indicate. You will be near the top of your class, and it will build true self-confidence and self-motivation. You will ENJOY this.
5) RIT attracts a lot of recruiters because it has a lot of employable students.

Some of the schools on your list are extremely hard. There will be zero margin of error.

Some of the schools on your list are quite impersonal. if you got frustrated and nobody would notice for a while.

Some of the schools on your list are obscure. Even if you excel, it is hard to get to the next level because employers won’t be able to calibrate your success because they don’t know your school.

If I had to pick the next school on your list, it would probably be Virginia Tech, but I don’t know if you would get in, and I think there is a good chance that you won’t be able to excel because you would get frustrated.

I know that you want to change your work and study habits, but it would also help to put yourself in a healthier environment.

In other words, for you, I’m suggesting the best school where you are likely to excel.

What state are you in? Asking because a lot of the state unis & even private schools within a state tend to accept more in-state students with lower stats than they want from OOS students.

@machovich my parents can afford 60k a year.
Let’s try to stay in that limit
I’m from Pennsylvania @ClassicRockerDad

@classicRockDad I visited rit and had an ok visit but didn’t love it.
I didn’t love that it had 3000 comp sci majors and seemed kinda not right…

Otherwise the size of rit seemed right and I liked campus well

You could apply to Penn State 2+2: pick the most convenient satellite campus for the first 2 years, get awesome grades, transfer to main campus.
You could go to Temple. You can try Pitt, not sure how selective they are for CS, or what their arrangement for satellite campuses are.
Also there’s Duquesne, St Joseph, Scranton - I think all of these are well below $60K and have pretty good CS programs.

Edit: Drill on math section of the SAT. Schools want CS applicants to have high Math scores.

I’m not interested in penn state temple or duquesne brother goes there…
But I will try to look Into those other colleges.
I am trying to aim as high as I can though.

My math sat is 630 aiming for 700
@scholarme

Just curious - what don’t you like about Penn State?

The size the atmosphere the partying
@scholarme

What was there will be, you cannot change the facts on your stats. You can resit in SAT or take ACT to prove to the college you are a worthy student.

Can you narrow down the list in your OP so we can comment? Right now, based on your list, there are some schools will be too much a reach with your stats. There is nothing wrong going to a lower ranked school and excel from that. You have a long way to go with your life, a short setback in HS will not determined future failure or success.

@artloverplus if you could identify what are out of my reach and what I could do that would be appreciated

@artloverplus can you help me see which are matches and what are reaches and what is out of reach for me.
I don’t know what my best chances are

@scholarme
@Machovich
@ClassicRockerDad i need to find more colleges that are matches for me so I could use advice for colleges that give me a medium non overwhelming good education.

One way to figure out if a school is a reach or a match is to google SchoolName SAT scores. Near the top of the results you’ll find sites that do profiles on each school.
I haven’t really looked into it but how about NJIT?
