Hey guys, I'm a Sophomore transfer student thats new to UCSB. I got placed into Manzanita Village, but from what i understand its more isolated and less social than other halls. I want a more social dorm setting, so i have been given the options of Santa Rosa and San Miguel. Can anyone give me their opinions or either places.Pro's and Con's would be cool too. Help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Santa Rosa.

San Mig AKA San Mighetto; Their elevators are known to break down on more than one occasion and break often.

Santa Rosa has it’s own small gym, a huge lounge area…

That’s pretty much all I remember. I was only in Santa Rosa for 20minutes and never in San Mig but from what I hear, it was pretty terribad.

I would take MV over these two any day. They might not be as “social” as the other halls but only because you grow closer to the people in the individual houses. You interact more with the people living with you in the house whereas in the dorms, you interact with everyone in the dorm so to say.

Yeah, i have heard all the same things about san miguel. And the reason i didnt really want manzanita village was because i transferred from UCR and i lived in an apartment with 4 other dudes, and it was fun, but I didnt get the to feel a real dorm experience. Plus i heard most people at MV are older students. I want to be with people who are closer to my age or who are new to the school as well.

Not all students in MV are “older” students. I think half of them are reserved for first years. I’m a third year and my roommate last year was placed in MV. His roommates in MV were also first years.

Come to think of it, most if not all of the people in his house were first years.

I got San Raph - any cool stories or opinions on this hall?

Everyone I know that has stayed at San Raph didn’t really enjoy it. From what I have heard, it’s hard to make friends in that dorm. YMMV.

Man, that sucks. They say that also about Manzanita, too. Is it because those two dorms are the ones mainly exclusive to transfers/grad students?

I my mmv on this one since I got single ;)

MV isnt mainly transfers. Raf is though.

San Rafael isn’t mainly transfers - it’s where most transfers might be sent out of all the dorms (probably what you meant), but for the past two years, there haven’t been that many because there have been more continuing students living there. I don’t believe there was an entire “transfer floor” last year like there was in the past, and there certainly wasn’t a freshman floor in San Raf like there was during 08-09.

Manzanita Village was made to be mostly freshman for the past two years, but I recall hearing that the upcoming year would see a lot less freshmen and more continuing students.

On San Raf: I used to think I was pretty awkward - my experience in this building’s singles’ hall has shown me that, you know, I’m really not that bad.

lol…i see…i sense a subtext here. personally, i’m a pretty awkward guy; although, it was mainly in high school. are the people here in the singles rack happen to mistake sb for sd? (lol, jk)

as for san raphael, itself, i have some vague notions, but what are some pro’s and cons of this hall?

Say no to San Miguel.

Santa Rosa is a very good choice.

What about Santa Ynez apartments?

So i chose San Miguel. The res hall advisor said im a better fit there than in Santa Rosa where i’d be in a learning community that i wasn’t interested in.
