Well I desperately want to go to Rice, and I will be applying ED, but I am starting to realize that I can't count on getting in.
So, I need some safeties. I have my state school but I don't particularly want to go there. :P

Colleges I am interested in (if Rice falls through). Just for perspective/what I am interested in.
Bowdoin
Middlebury
Cornell

I would appreciate schools that have both a strong biology program and a strong english program as I am not sure what I want to study. Region doesn't matter. :]
Thanks!

Cornell and Rice and Bowdoin are all VERY different. All of them are definitely reaches. I really don’t know that many colleges outside NE, so I can’t help. I know Oberlin has a VERY good English program and a pretty good Bio one too, but it would be a match.

If you are interested in LACs with strong sciences, and don’t mind places that are a little less preppy than Bowdoin and Middlebury, take a look at the midwestern LACs: Grinnell in particular has outstanding sciences, is a match for someone with your stats, and has outstanding merit and financial aid. Another good option, also a match, is Oberlin. If you like Bowdoin, Colby and Bates are the two LACs that are probably most similar and slightly less competitive for admission (although Bates’ science facilities were not impressive when we visited).

Carleton has a very strong science and English program. If you visit, you can easily throw in St. Olaf and Macalester to the trip. I would think Carleton would be a low reach, Macalester a match and St. Olaf possible a safety.

The other college that came to mind was Kenyon College. They have an exceptional English program which overshadows their strength in the sciences, including Biology.

this obviously wouldn’t be a match or safety but as a high reach is close in vibe/culture to bowdoin: Dartmouth. great hiking BTW, and like bowdoin, it has a wonderful outdoor pursuits club.

UVM might be a good safety for you. burlington is a wonderful college town, UVM is architecturally gorgeous (same architects as Brown), great outdoor athletics, good bio and english depts (also good med school).
