So rice has really appealed to me these last 6 months and I'm deciding to apply. However I have a few problems. The Rice admissions website reports that they accept either 1) SAT I and 2 SAT II's or 2) ACT. The problem is, I only made a 2040 on the SAT I, but it was a bad test day for me, the next week I took the ACT and got a 33 bordering on a 34. In your venerable opinions, what would be best for admissions, studying intensively and raising my SAT I to 2200+ levels, and taking SAT II's (I took a practice Math IIC and did really well), or just focus on bumping up my ACT a point or two to 35 possibly 36 levels? Basically, I'm asking if my application will be disadvantaged with only an ACT score reported.

If you can do well on your SAT IIs (especially if you're doing something like engineering, and can show you have good quantitative skills), take them, and submit your SAT. A 2040 isn't terrible; but if you really want, you can re-take it too.

Honestly, I would just send both in though (assuming you do enough SAT IIs). Bumping your ACT up by a couple of points really isn't all that huge (as in make-or-break) for admissions, at least I hope not.

A 2040 SAT is about equivalent to a 31 ACT, so a 33 ACT is a lot better. You should go for it and try both tests again and submit it all, Rice will automatically consider whichever one benefits you both. And yes, do the SAT II's as well, if you got a 33 ACT you should have no problem with Math II and the other SAT II's, I found them easier than the SAT I since it's more specific knowledge and less tricky questions.
