I need some further information about Umich MAE program

I'm an international student and I'm from China. I was provided an offer of admission in Umich MAE program. Actually, I do think Umich has great reputation, but I'm not sure whether MAE program also has great reputation or not....(I've heard some negative opinions towards MAE program, for example, "that program is in low-quality...")

I'm not going to pursue academic career, so I think MAE program is quite suitable for me. And if I want to find a job, valuable job/internship experience is utterly important. However, some people assert that it is really hard to find an internship, because of the location of Umich. Yet, I'm also told by some people that the companies in Detroit or Chicago will pose some positions in Umich's career service center (or something like that), therefore I can have many chances to get an internship or a job.

So I really need more further information about Umich MAE program, in terms of finding an internship/job, and the reputation/quality of the program or other aspects.

Thank you for helping me! And any suggestions will be very welcome!

No one reply? Please, I need your help…

I am not familiar with that school/department. I do know that when it comes to industry it all comes down to who you know. I think it’s important to have the skills for the job you want, but the other 50% comes from networking. Michigan has a great reputation and you are not trapped there when you are done. You can look for any jobs that are available anywhere in the country. Some may even offer you a relocation package for you to move. You may want to contact their career services to explore where graduates from there end up working at.

Also talk with your dept and inquire about your concern with finding work. I am sure they would be the best source for your questions.

Umich ann @ ann harbor? MAE as in mechanical and aerospace engineering? If so, I do not believe they have a combined program. Mechanical and Aerospace are separated at Umich, both are very good programs.

I’m a chemical engineering PhD student at the University of Michigan. First, are you talking about the Ann Arbor campus? Or one of the satellites? It’s a very important distinction. If Ann Arbor, then relax. U of M has one of the best reputations in the world for engineering and our mechanical engineering program is a top ten department in the US. Second, what sort of degree program were you admitted to? PhD, MS, etc? It’s important to know.

Lastly, Ann Arbor is a great place to work and live. There’s a large Chinese student population, and you’ll have trouble fitting right in if you come here. It is a little isolated, but you’ll hardly have any difficulty finding work afterwords because of that.

Also talk with your dept and inquire about your concern with finding work. I am sure they would be the best source for your questions.

Thanks for your suggestions ! It really help! I’ll talk about with my department with my concern with finding work~

MAE program is for Master of Applied Economics. This program ranks #12 in Economics major ranking. I think it’s a good program, but I also heard some negative comments about it. So, I’m confused.

Yes, I’m talking about Umich Ann Arbor campus. And I was admitted to Master of Applied Economics program. Unlike the Master of Arts Degree in Economics, the MAE is NOT an intermediate step to the Ph.D. So, here comes to a new problem for me. I’ve heard that if I don’t want to pursue academic career, Ph.D. is not necessary, yet, someone told me that masters of economics will be more likely to suffer from the difficulty of finding a job. ( because master of economics is more academic-oriented, compared to master of finance or business…) For me, I’m not going to pursue a academic career, so I don’t want to earn a Ph.D. But, I’m worried about finding a job after my master program…
