I need some help-Sports Broadcastor

Hi I am currently a junior in high school and after graduation i want to start a career in sports broadcasting or somewhere along those lines, but the only thing is, i really dont know where to start, first off i live in wisconsin, and i dont mind going out of state. Secondly I dont know what major to look for, like I know there is Communications and Journalism majors but I m not sure if itd be more beneficial for me to major in something that has a concentration in something like sports broadcasting/sports communications/sports journalism or does that not really matter? Also, I was wondering if it would benefit me more for after my college graduation to go to a bigger school that maybe has some D1 sports or does it really not matter what size college i go to? I feel if i go to a bigger school with D1 sports I will have a bigger and better job after colleges. For this reason if you look at guys on espn they all went to bigger colleges that have D1 sports. So if someone could please help me answer these questions and maybe give me some guidance on what to do, i would GREATLY appreciate it.

Well either

Become a professional athlete, retire, and go into sports broadcasting.

or

Go to a school with a good communications program. (And plan a back-up career).

You might want to check out colleges internet sports broadcasting links.

Syracuse essentially is a feeder school for ESPN and has a great broadcast journalism program. I would recommend checking it out.

Also, check into Penn State and Ohio University. Tennessee has a program as well.

thanks for the suggestions, any other responses?

Well, what are your stats?

Are you taking a challenging curriculum at your high school?

Did you take the PSAT (I know scores haven’t been released, yet.)

I have a 3.7 gpa. I took the psat but like you said i havent gotten it back and ive gotten a 23 on my act. and i also plan on taking college credit english senior year

I have heard that Cal Poly has a good communications program (I have no personal knowlege of it though).

Northwestern

Does your state have colleges that have big sprorts programs? You can often find good Sports Broadcasting programs at schools that have big sports programs. Those schools naturally can provide internships and such in the field.

In the meantime, practice to improve your ACT score and also take the SAT (some kids do better on the SAT).

What is your home state?

My home state is wisconsin, so major colleges would be wisconsin and marquette, and wisconsin does not have a boadcasting program, and marquette does. but niether have a sports concentration

What about USC (Calif)?

A close school big in your studies would be Syracuse University.

^The OP is in Wisconsin, not NY.

Anyways, Ohio U is ideal for your stats and has an excellent program. Indiana U may be worth a look, as well.

Alright great suggestions! thanks sooooo much

Intern at local tv stations, websites. Get part time jobs. Intern over the summer, christmas holidays, spring break. You need to get your foot in the door and start making connections in the industry.
