Essay will be good if not great dealing with justice and civil rights or maybe education.

Possible major Near Eastern Studies or something dealing with Public Affairs and Education or English.

Yeah I thought about that after the post. I would prefer small LAC in N.E. and do not rec Brandeis. Strong language department and middle eastern studies is preferable and I would somewhere with a decent driving time (under 3hrs please) to a major city i.e. Boston, NYC, etc. No single-sex schools please or religious. I think that about covers it. I was looking at schools like Williams or Amherst. Please rec 3 to 4 schools.

In addition to blaineko's list, I'd add Dickinson, Furman, Gettysburg, Hendrix, Rollins and Tulane. Really give Dickinson a good look, especially in the political science department.

While you are looking, I would Wesleyan, Swathmore and Haverford to the mix. Wesleyan has a very intellectual and diverse student body. I think it would be a good fit for your interests and profile.

You have an excellent list of schools. I agree with you that Bard looks very interesting.

The only other school that I can think of that fits your intellectual profile is not in the Northeast. That would be Oberlin in Ohio. If Bard appeals to you, then I think that Oberlin would appeal to you as well. I would think that Bard, Wesleyan and Oberlin have a fair amount of overlap with regard to their applicant pools.

Dickinson would be a good choice - very strong in languages, graduates more language majors than any other LAC, including Middlebury. It's about 2 hours from Philadelphia in a decent sized town. Pretty, historic campus. Students a bit on the preppy side but strong academics. They are trying very hard to boost diversity in terms of geography, sex (they need more males), and race, so I would say it might be close to a safety for you

If you want a LAC in New England, why are you applying to schools in Miss.?
How did you decide on New England? Have you ever been there? I am wondering whether you've experienced New England winters or hospitality, both of which are very different than what you've experienced in Mississippi. There really is a huge difference between Miss. and NE.

What have been your big city experiences?

If you are sure that you want to be in a LAC in NE, then you need to find some LACs in NE for your safety schools. Make sure, too, that your parents are willing to send you that far from home, including paying for tuition costs. I'm sure that your in-state schools will offer you a better deal financially than would most private schools out of state even if you get need-based aid from those private schools. I would imagine you qualify for wonderful merit aid in state.

Due to the horrible educational system in Miss., which means that in general, students have very low SAT scores, and due to Mississippians' tendency to stay close to home, I think that you have a decent chance at all of the schools on your list. This would be true even if you weren't black. There aren't many students in your state with good test scores and NE aspirations.

To answer Northstarmom's questions
1. I am applying to schools in-state b/c I need safeties and I am guaranteed admission and it was free so why not.
2. I really like Boston and NYC and have family in the NE region
3. I have been to Boston, NYC, Detroit, and Chicago(I know the latter 2 are not in the NE) in winter and I treked around Cambridge in subzero weather in a pea coat and wing tips I will survive. As for the hospitality it was a little lacking for my tastes but the people were overall cool.
4. My "big city" experiences have been great but I can't live in a metropolis because I like quiet and privacy a little too much to live in such a clustered environment. However, I really like the varied opportunities affored to me by living near a major metropolitan area.

I think that covered everything.

P.S. I am going to research Oberlin this weekend and let ya know what I think. Later y'all

Oberlin did not make the cut unfortunately. I just got back from Blue Key and to those of you who know what that is finally I thought I was the only one of our people on here. I am now looking at Florida schools especially UofF and Miami

" I am applying to schools in-state b/c I need safeties and I am guaranteed admission and it was free so why not."

A true safety school is a school that you could afford to go to and that you also would love attending. Is that true for your schools in-state that you're applying to? If so, go for it!

If you're not, be aware that there are students whose parents virtually force them to accept free rides deals from colleges down the street because once such an admission is in hand, the parents decide they aren't willing to send their kid 1,000 miles away to a college where the parent also would have to help pay for the education.

Be careful for what you apply to. You may have to go there.

You can have better safeties than the ones you have picked. Some out of state public universities probably also would admit you and be affordable and higher ranked than the safeties you have on your list.

If you don't want a big city, don't apply to Tufts.

I picked my safeties because I really want a small LAC and if I don't get into one now then I can survive a year at them and then transfer to somewhere more suitable. I have begun looking into some state schools like clemson and uga.

I needed something to make me stand out so I figured since I like community service and believe that everyone should have access to a good education if they want it I would start a scholarship to help with that. I am now writing a proposal and trying to find some potential donors. I want to have it up and running by the time I graduate but no later than when I start colllege.
