<p>My brother did some very stupid things today and he will end up being charged with petty theft. Is this a misdemeanor? Will colleges learn about this charge when he applies later in the fall? Will it keep him out of top/good colleges? </p>

<p>Most likely a misdemeanor. Get a goood attorney asap. It will be worth the money not to have anything on his record. Yes, I imagine having misdemeanors on his record will not have a positive impact on college admissions for your bro. perhaps another CCer has experience or knows of a similiar situation?</p>
<p>As long as it is expunged from his record after he pays a fine or complete community service hours there's no need to tell a college.</p>
