I Need Some Help

Ok, so here's my situation:

I'm a pretty well rounded high school senior that loves not only being a band geek, but also being a jock (I've went from jazz band practice to pitching in a baseball game before). So I'm obviously looking for a school with a lot of activity (I really don't want to be bored in college). I've been accepted into 10 schools, but I've narrowed it down to Georgetown and the University of Miami.

On one side, going to Georgetown is the opportunity of a lifetime. However, I would not receive any financial aid from them (my EFC is too high to qualify for aid, but I have a twin brother is going to Xavier this year and is going to be costing my family 25k a year, so therefore my family honestly cannot afford to pay for a Georgetown education). On the other side, I am in the running for a full tuition scholarship from Miami.

What do you all on College Confidential think I should do? Should I take out the student loans to go to Georgetown, or go to the University of Miami for next to nothing?

University of Miami!

Georgetown is a great school that would offer you a great education and some wonderful opportunities. But it’s not worth a $200k debt (and this is assuming you could get that much money in loans… it’s not so easy for an 18yo!).

The University of Miami sounds like a wonderful choice for you. Maybe you could ask your parents if they could put away some of the money they will be saving on your education, and then you could use that for grad school, or just to have some money once you leave college. College is what you make it, and I’m sure you could do just as well at Miami as anywhere else. And is Georgetown $200k better than Miami? No. Ask anyone.

I will also probably end up turning down Gtown for a school that will be more financially affordable for me and my family. In the end, the Gtown name just isn’t worth it for me.
