I need some help...

Okay, here's the deal. School starts in about a week so I have to figure this out before school starts...

Up to now, I've been playing the violin for 5 years and I've always been in the school orchestra (not first chair or anything though).

Next year, I don't know what I should do...I really don't have room to fit orchestra into my schedule so I was wondering whether I should join the county orchestra...and also start private lessons and take exams to pass levels on the violin...

OR

should I use that time to study harder on APs...SATs...SAT IIs...and be more committed to school clubs...piano...etc. Basically, should I join the county orchestra or not...even though I know I won't ever get far in it or stand out in it and be first chair or concertmaster...

Which one do colleges prefer I do?

btw...the reason I have to have this figured out before school starts is because orchestra auditions start when school starts so I have to make my decision NOW...

I'm taking a year off band too, partly because of a scheduling conflict and partly because I got mad at the teacher.

I don't think it's a big deal.

Well first of all, you should be doing what you like, not want colleges "prefer" you to do.

I've been in my school's top orchestra for all of my high school career and I love it. I wouldn't leave it. If I had to, then yes, I would join the county orchestra and give private lessons because I really, truly enjoy it.

Colleges prefer you to do what you love to do. If you don't love playing in the orchestra, and would rather do something else, do that. If not, keep going.
