As you can see by my user name, I'm an idealist. I'm applying to UW-Madison, Minnesota-Twin Cities (borderline safety), Dartmouth, William and Mary, Macalester, and NYU. I also got into Northland College as a super-safety. I'd like some more safeties, if someone could help me out.

Chance me:

GPA: 3.4 (25 out of 90), no weighted grades, super small school, but pretty competitive grade wise, my senior grades are very good though so far..

EC's: Senior Class President
Forensics (24/25, Silver State Medalist)
7 High School Theatre Productions
SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions)
Editor of School Newspaper
Varsity Cross Country Letter

Awards and stuff: Honor Roll
High Honor Roll
Student of the Month
Faculty VIP
Who's Who Among American High School Students nominee

Thanks a lot!

Also, a school with nice financial aid would be nice. Gracias.

Pretty difficult (Government/Econ, Advanced Composition, Spanish IV (Year 4), AP European History, Novels, Public Speaking/Speaking Arts, Trig/Stats/Probability).. My school only has two AP classes, the rest are online, and you are only encouraged to take one.

Ah, I was about to say, you didn't list any APs, but if your school only offers two, that's fair. Bad at suggestions, but the clarification is important for anyone who can help you out. :]

i agree, though it depends on the perspective for comparison.

for some, schools such as indiana university - bloomington, or university of iowa are seen as prestigious schools, and both would most likely be safeties in his case

mmm, i wouldn't say UVA would ever be a safety unless you lived in-state.

if those were your "safeties" you would really have to have 1500+ (old) SAT scores, and be top 2nd or 3rd percentile of your graduating class, among other things

maybe you are those things, but even still, it's hard to call a school as selective as UVA out of state a "safety."

I could see it with NYU and maybe to a very small extent CMU, which is only slightly less selective than UVA

U of Toronto, McGill U, Miami U (Ohio), Union College (New York), Fordham, Clark U (Mass.), Smith, Mt. Holyoke (last two are female only). Boston College would be a reach for you.

Beloit - a safe match (and not too far from Madison!). I'd like to see your list have a few more solid matches. It doesn't sound like you would go to your super safety unless someone put a gun to your head, so that's not a viable option. By concentrating on solid matches. you should have a 50% or better acceptance rate at schools that you would be happy to attend. Also, it's rare that NYU is on the same list as Dartmouth. What's the connection?

Or I could have a 1500+ on the old SAT and a high GPA at one of the best high schools in the country. Like I said, with the right connections (through your high school or your family) you can in fact call prestigious universities true safeties. It's not "normal" but it's not exactly rare either.

Oh, and I wasn't out-of-state. My high school is UVA's biggest feeder.

shrug You can call it bragging but in the context of where I went to school, it's not at all remarkable. If I wanted to brag I would've called Cornell a safety. Being a Jefferson student calling UVA a safety puts me in the same boat as around 40% of my class.

And in any case, I'm in college. I have no reason to brag about what my safeties were. I'm just correcting the misguided notion that there's no such thing as a "prestigious" safety.
