I need some serious decision help right now

I was just admitted off the NYU Stern waitlist yesterday but I don’t know if I should go. It would cost me 80K a year versus my currently committed school Emory at 65K a year. My parents seem to be okay with paying full for Stern if I really want to go but I’m unsure if I am fully devoted to business (which is a problem since NYU isn’t very worth it for most other STEM majors). Here’s a bit about both schools:

Emory

  • admitted to Emory College for applied mathematics
  • 10K/year granted in scholarships
  • seriously considering applying to their business school at the end of my sophomore year (that’s when they admit students at Goizueta)
  • the location could be an issue as I’m from New England and do not plan to stay down south after college
  • has a campus/greenery but also close to city so a good mix of both traditional college campus and city

NYU

  • admitted to Stern, planning on statistics/finance major
  • have to pay full tuition and fees
  • one of top business schools, great location, hopefully more internship opportunities
  • not really a traditional campus but I like the city vibes
  • is much more competitive and cutthroat

I have like two days left to decide so would really appreciate any words of advice. Thank you so much!

If you aren’t 100% committed to business, then stick with Emory.

Also, since it sounds like you wouldn’t want to move to the south after college, so why not experience it in a fun setting for four years of college? I say take the business school pressure off and broaden your horizons with Emory.

I’d go with Emory irrespective of cost, but especially now. I don’t get the obsession with NYU for undergrad. To me, a college campus seems a better transition from youth to young adulthood. NYU would be great for grad school as the city is your oyster and you’ve matured.

Plus $15K/year x 4 years is one year of tuition of an MBA program. That’s a big savings.
