I need suggestions for colleges!! please help!

Hi, my name is rory, and i am trying to match myself with a good college. im hoping that someone can help me out and give me a few suggestions.

I go to a small tech school in the heart of providence rhode islands bad neighborhoods. i am a white male, who lives and comes from a small white suburban town. this is relavent because after spending high school as a minority, i am looking for a less diverse college. im not saying ALL white, just majority.

My intended major is philosophy, with a focus later in Metaphysics, or something simmilar. I am not very smart when it comes to stuff like math (my HS has almost no math classes), but when it comes to thinking, or writing/reading i am pretty intelligent. so i need a college that wont blast me with work, but keeps me engaged and challenged.

Socially, im looking for a school that i can build friends, but also go out and party with anyone. i have no problems with drinking or smoking.

Financially, i am middle class. so im looking for an affordable college. i dont think i want to spend 25 grand on a school, so thats pretty much the limit, unless i find a really really nice match.

this isnt important as the other things, but i would love if i could find a college that was atleast pleasing with thier transportation/parking, food services/dining, and dorm rooms. i hear alot about how colleges look nice, but the buildings are falling apart.

colleges ive been thinking about are URI, Rutgers, Xavier, University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, some of the universitys of california (they seem a little too superficial for me), and west virginia university. im also interested in colleges in the UK/canada.

i live in Rhode island, so anywere in new england would be perfect, because i dont want to travel TOO far. but i will if im really interested in a school

UNCCH so far seems to have what i want, but if anyone can help me find a smaller school that has good partys, a good philosophy dept, good dorm life, good chicks, and is decent financially, i would be really grateful.

Add me on facebook at "rory mcguire krueger", or leave a message hear.

Thanks a TON to whoever replys, or even reads this

stats are ACT–

April 2009

Composite-19
English-21
Math-15
Reading-24
Science-16
Combined English and Writing-21

October 2009

Composite-21
English-22
Reading-31
Math-16
Science-13
Combined English and Writing-22

Ok…

Your stats are a bit low. thank goodness for your reading score  That will likely save you. There are schools that will accept an ACT 21.

You live in R.I.

Did you take the SAT?

What is your GPA?

Your list isn’t really consistent with your budget ($25k per year) or your stats.

No UC’s cost that little for OOS students and you’d need higher stats. UNC-chapel hill and Rutgers are also too expensive for OOS and you won’t get admitted because of your stats.

Nearly all OOS publics are going to cost you about $30k-50k per year. You won’t qualify for any merit because your ACT is too low.

I don’t see you getting any merit from any privates, either. They typically cost $35-50k per year.

Have you parents said that they can pay $25k? Can they pay anymore than that?

Is URI the only public in RI? I’m trying to think of some inexpensive privates that have Greek systems and decent philosophy depts.

what kind of career do you see yourself in with a philosophy degree?

Yes, my stats are low. but my school is way different than usual high school. the transcripts are way different, so ACT scores are less important. instead of class, we go to internships in a field of our choice. thats one main difference, so transferring job skills/experience onto a test is really difficult for the kids at my school, since we dont learn the math and science like in most schools.

I did not take the SAT, and we do not have GPAs

the budget im not sure about, i just threw that number out there, based on that collegeboard.com profiles for OOS colleges are around 25k.

i dont think i want to go to any UCs anyway, and im not even sure about a private school.

URI isnt the only public option, but i do not like the other colleges.

I forgot to add that i am interested in UConn and Umass Amherst.

Please chat with you rparents about what they can afford and have them do the work to see if need-based aid is likely to close any gap.
Mom2 is correct on all points. UMass is a good option although I do not know the cost. Perhaps UNH, SUNY-New Paltz; SUNY -Purchase or Keene State?
Have you met with a guidance counselor?
