I need the low-down, please help

So basically I'm a philosophy/poli sci double major guaranteed admittance to UCSD in the fall as a Junior.

I'm trying to maximize my success at meeting people and I plan to live in the Village transfer housing. Is this a good place to live to meet people or should I look into the Muir dorms(my college of choice)?

Also, how does the greek life work for someone who is trying to join as a junior? I love to party and have fun but I don't want to be a ****-on for my 2 years I've been waiting so long for!

The Village is amazing!- It’s all brand new/clean/spacious. Muir dorms you won’t be able to get into and it’s all freshman and a few sophmores (and they’re kinda old and gross).

The village is all transfers- everyone gets to know each other- they have lots of parties, tv nights etc. fun place to live! – it’s super close to the glider port above black’s beach which is amazing at sunset. It’s close to Rimac- (the big gym). Close to I-house (international house)— that’s where the international study abroad students live they have lots of parties. Good dining halls nearby.

Greek life at UCSD is pretty bad. There are no frat houses so parties are at lame clubs with no drinking allowed.

You can join the Board Club for like $20 for the year---- which is surfers/snowboarders. They have the best parties- real parties. They go on surf trips to Mexico and snow trips up to mammoth.

The greek system is also very divided, either an Asian frat/sorority or a White frat/sorority.

SurfSD88, you’re wrong about greek life at ucsd. There are plenty of IFC Frats and panhellenic sororities with great diversity. Only the multicultural frats/sororities are exclusive only to certain backgrounds. Parties are not at lame clubs, there are houses off campus where people party.

Wow, thank you so much for your quick and informative reply. I must admit I find the board club very interesting as although I am new to surf and don’t know how to snowboard, I would love to learn to be decent at both. (especially surf).

I’m also ecstatic you praise the village so highly!! I am so excited!

definitely live in the village.

surfsd88 is obviously not involved in greek life at ucsd because very few parties are held at clubs. and to answer your question, rushing either IFC or Panhellenic as a 3rd year isn’t uncommon. waiting until your 4th year will definitely hinder your chances of getting a bid though.
and you could always join the board club and rush, so you get to experience both.

Don’t listen to Surfsd88, he just wants to promote the Board club.

But I do agree with him about the village; it’s really nice there!

If you are as social as you say, then you’re definitely going to want to join a fraternity. Without it, there isn’t much partying you’ll be able to do. And the parties aren’t at “lame clubs” either.

You’ll figure it all out when you get here, just rush and see what it’s like!
