I Need to Get into UC Santa Cruz (what are my chances)

Hello,

As you all see these posts constantly, I do apologize. The only school I am willing to attend is UC Santa Cruz (I’m applying to more for my parents and worst comes to worst, i’ll go to the community college in Santa Cruz). Here is my info:

-SAT 1100 (retaking 2 more times so will be a little higher)
-Weighted academic GPA 3.77
-taken four community college classes, in two APs, took AP Psych last year and got a 4 on the AP test, always been in honors.
-Engineering academy (4 year program I dropped senior year because I am not interested in STEM)
-Over 400 hours of community service= on the board for a philanthropic foundation where we fund youth led projects to improve our city. In addition, I am an organizer for a local non profit dedicated dismantling forms of oppression within the community and schools through education. I am also a Youth Advocacy Leader for a foundation dedicated to serving LGBTQ people, where I assist in organizing and volunteering at events. Since freshman year, I have accumulated over 140 community service hours from working in theater crew.
-president and founder of trans cis alliance, to give trans youth both a safe space and to improve the school’s inclusion of queer students

  • president and founder of Fight The Isms, where we are working on implementing more ethnic and queer history into history classes, representing the underrepresented students on campus, and changing the school for the better as much as we can for the next year’s students.

AAAAAAAA
i’m just really stressing !!! I gotta get into UCSC and I hope someone has a better idea than me about admittance.

Thank you all!

Based on GPA, you are within range for UCSC but SAT score is below the 25th percentile so hopefully you will be able to bump this up. You have some very focused EC’s and if you write some compelling essays, it may be enough to get an acceptance. Right now I would say a 50/50 chance. Best of luck.

UC GPA 25th-75th percentile: 3.70-4.13

UC admit rate based on capped weighted UC GPA and not major specific is 59%.

SAT 25th-75th percentile: 1170-1380

Hey there, I’m a second year at UCSC. Back in 2016, I had a 1530 (old scale) **980 (new scale) on the SAT and 3.8 GPA, having great extracurriculars (as you do) will definitely help. I think you’ll be fine in regards to getting accepted. Go Slugs!

This is not a bad alternative. Cabrillo College (which is actually in Aptos) is easily the #1 transfer “feeder” to UCSC. Starting at Cabrillo is a well established route to a UCSC degree, and the Cabrillo counselors know all the ins and outs. For 2016-17, they had a UCSC transfer acceptance rate of 68.2 % (225 out of 330). If you qualify under the TAG program, then transfer to UCSC should be guaranteed.

My dream as a senior was UCSC, too. I didn’t get in (waitlisted, took self off) and made the huge mistake of not going to CCC (Chose a CSU instead). I’m here to say that if your dream is really UCSC and for some reason you don’t get in, you can shine at Cabrillo, De Anza, or even your local community college and live out your dreams that way.

But to me you seem like you have a good shot.

i think you are on the bubble - it could go either way, compelling essays would certainly tip things your way. If it doesn’t work out, CC/TAG is a viable option but, you should also look at others. Did you apply elsewhere?

yeah, I got into portland state university and I am waiting on university of washington, ucd, and ucb (my reach schools). I am definitely considering the cc cabrillo college in santa cruz county if all fails (definitely way cheaper)

Hello! I hope you still see this since this thread is a bit old, but i’m currently a freshman at UCSC so here my advice:

My hs stats were 8 AP classes, 1 CC class, 3.6 GPA, 28 on the ACT, 60 hours of community service, and various superrrr involved EC’s.

I think your stats are good, but you need to improve your SAT score. I highly, highly recommend you take the ACT. I took the SAT three times with extensive studying and got 1130 all three times, but then I took the ACT once with no studying and got a 28 (SAT 1260). Many people don’t like the ACT because there’s a science section, but the science section is super easy if you know the tricks. (Research this…the main thing is that the questions confuse you with long paragraphs and units you’ve never heard of, so many kids waste time trying to understand the science. However, 90% of the time the question just needs you to find a number in a chart or paragraph. You don’t need to know anythingggg about science, just find the numbers. But please research this more). I also found the ACT to have a way easier math section, and i’ve pretty much almost failed every math class i’ve ever taken.

Other than that I think you have a pretty good chance. My other advice for you is to start your personal statement essays MONTHS in advance. I literally worked on them almost every day from the day they came out till the day they were due, which i think is about 4 months. It was great not to have to stress over them the week before like most of my friends, and I actually had time to think about what the most effective way to fit stuff into the word count limit was.
